When I update families on what their child engages in during the school day, the response is frequently, “I wish I could find this out from them, too. My child only says ‘good,’ when I ask how their school day was.” I regularly get asked by parents how they can find out more details from their young children on their day of learning in the classroom. My response: ask your child direct questions. For example, in a Pre-K setting almost each day the class will read aloud a book, play in different learning centers, and sing familiar songs. Ask your child specific questions about their day, such as the book they read, the materials they played with, or the songs they sang. It will help to trigger their memory and get them talking!

Reflections on the last day of school
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Parents: get to know your child’s teaching team. Be as involved as you can accommodate given your work/responsibilities/life. Volunteer, chaperone field trips, ask the teacher how you can help. You’ll make a positive impact on the teacher (who has so much on their plate), the school community, the students, and your child - plus, a massive benefit to you is you’ll be better informed on who is teaching your child all day! This is key.
I work in schools as a teacher who supports students with special needs individually, both within their classroom setting and with targeted skill development outside of their classroom. That means I spend a whole lot of time in different teachers’ classrooms.
Every. Teacher. Is. Unique. Within the same state, city, district, school, administration, grade, and curriculum, the classrooms vary *dramatically*.
The teacher sets the tone of the room and determines the amount of student autonomy. Getting to know them will inform you on the atmosphere in the classroom. It can help you to understand the schedule and structure of the school day, classroom expectations, dynamics and needs in the room, how the teacher facilitates conflict management, provides praise, and so much more.
