When I update families on what their child engages in during the school day, the response is frequently, “I wish I could find this out from them, too. My child only says ‘good,’ when I ask how their school day was.” I regularly get asked by parents how they can find out more details from their young children on their day of learning in the classroom. My response: ask your child direct questions. For example, in a Pre-K setting almost each day the class will read aloud a book, play in different learning centers, and sing familiar songs. Ask your child specific questions about their day, such as the book they read, the materials they played with, or the songs they sang. It will help to trigger their memory and get them talking!

📖 Letter sounds are vital because that is how we learn to read! 📖 💡 This activity is great for learners aged 3-6. It can be modified depending on the child’s learning goals. ➡️ Print or make a sheet of letters in a random order. Grab a glass baking tray and pour water with some food coloring in it. Add a spoonful of corn starch, and voila - the corn starch will make the water cloudy and opaque! Get a clear glass to see the mystery letters beneath it (water in the glass helped), and prompt your learner to say the sound the letter makes. 💕 Follow .katie.tutors for more ways to play and learn! ⭐️ I am a literacy and math tutor and NYS licensed special education teacher who works with children of ALL abilities aged 2-9 years old in Westchester, NY. Preparing your child for preschool? Social emotional learning is key. 🔑 At the core is teaching your child to express their emotions. When your child can name their emotions, it puts them in the driver’s seat to learn to use tools to navigate those feelings. 🙌🏼In this video, I sing a song that can be used as early as infancy to introduce and familiarize your child with various feelings. 🎶 Verbalizing emotions is one of the first steps in promoting emotional resilience. 💪🏼⭐️ I am an early childhood tutor who is passionate about instilling targeted skills and concepts based on individual needs and strengths. Reflections on the last day of school

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Parents: get to know your child’s teaching team. Be as involved as you can accommodate given your work/responsibilities/life. Volunteer, chaperone field trips, ask the teacher how you can help. You’ll make a positive impact on the teacher (who has so much on their plate), the school community, the students, and your child - plus, a massive benefit to you is you’ll be better informed on who is teaching your child all day! This is key.

I work in schools as a teacher who supports students with special needs individually, both within their classroom setting and with targeted skill development outside of their classroom. That means I spend a whole lot of time in different teachers’ classrooms.

Every. Teacher. Is. Unique. Within the same state, city, district, school, administration, grade, and curriculum, the classrooms vary *dramatically*.

The teacher sets the tone of the room and determines the amount of student autonomy. Getting to know them will inform you on the atmosphere in the classroom. It can help you to understand the schedule and structure of the school day, classroom expectations, dynamics and needs in the room, how the teacher facilitates conflict management, provides praise, and so much more.

Happy Tutor Tuesday! Environmental print is the everyday written words and symbols that are commonly in our environment, such as on logos, food packaging, and signs.

You can use environmental print to help your learner read by encouraging them on an ongoing basis to look for words they recognize and read them to you.

What environmental print does your learner already know how to read? 🔤

Looking for a hands-on approach to segmenting syllables? ✋🏼

By using tangible manipulatives, you provide your learner with a concrete, hands on way to physically segment words into syllables. 🐸

01/25/2023

When your learner is initially introduced to segmenting syllables in words, I recommend practicing with familiar names, such as the names of family members, classmates, pets, friends, or neighbors. This can be an engaging & interactive way to teach syllable segmentation, as it gives learners a personal connection to the activity. 👏🏼

In this video, I provide examples of clapping the number of syllables in familiar names. Then, I offer a way to scaffold this skill by providing a visual cue. 🔵🔵

Which beloved names would your child love to practice with? 💛
