Pleasanton School Board Candidate Forum

The Pleasanton Weekly will host a candidate forum for the contested PUSD Board of Trustees Area 5 seat on Wednesday, September 23, from 6:00–7:30 p.m. in the PUSD District Office Boardroom, 5758 W. Las Positas Blvd.

All three candidates — Thomas Choi, Karen Fletcher, and Brett Martinez — have been invited to participate. The forum provides an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about issues affecting PUSD ahead of the November election. Community members who live in Trustee Area 5 are especially encouraged to attend.

Community members may submit questions for consideration through 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 20.

Amador Students Shine at AI Summit

Three Amador Valley High School computer science students represented PUSD at the Contra Costa County Office of Education’s AI Summit alongside their teacher, Kevin Kiyoi. During a presentation on Vibe Coding, the students guided attendees through creating web apps using prompt engineering, showcasing their knowledge, confidence, and technical skills.

Kiyoi also presented on the development of PUSD’s AI Policy, while Jr. Yee, Assistant Director of Educational Technology, shared insight into the District’s broader AI strategy and ongoing work. Together, the presentations highlighted both the innovative learning happening in our classrooms and PUSD’s thoughtful approach to the opportunities presented by AI.

SIAC brings students from across PUSD together to share their perspectives, collaborate with district leaders, and help develop initiatives that improve the student experience. PUSD High Schools Rank Among the Best

Amador Valley and Foothill High Schools earned recognition in the U.S. News & World Report 2026–27 Best High Schools Rankings, placing in the top 4% statewide. Amador Valley ranked #79 in California and #546 nationally, while Foothill ranked #84 in California and #577 nationally. The rankings highlight schools whose students excel on state assessments, succeed in college-level coursework, and graduate at high rates. This is an incredible honor and a proud moment for our students, staff, and families.

PUSD Student Luka Mijatovic Wins U.S. National Swimming Championship

Congratulations to Foothill High School student Luka Mijatovic, who won the men’s 400m freestyle at the Toyota USA National Championships! At just 17 years old, Luka became the youngest U.S. men’s national swimming champion since Michael Phelps in 2002, setting a new 17–18 National Age Group record with a time of 3:43.5. Luka will represent Team USA later this month at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Vancouver. Congratulations, Luka, on this outstanding achievement!
