Hey, thank you! I can't see who has logged on to see my stories but thanks! Clearly I've not kept up with this due to time constraints. Don't even get me started on how lame I've been. My interest in history and crime has not waned, just my responsibilities have increased since I first posted.

James was buried in St. Andrews Cemetery in Grand Rapids.  Most likely in the paupers section.

Clara was not found in the 1930 census, but by 1940. Clara had remarried, was widowed, and living with her sister Millie and her husband, Mr. Bishop. Clara passed away in 1962 and was buried at Flint Memorial Cemetery near Mount Morris.

It was in July of 1909 that Clara was granted a new trial and either the prosecutor did not proceed with a new trial or she was let go for time served.

Clara's lawyer filed an appeal and one was granted.  Was Clara a virtuous woman before she met James?  Probably not, nor...

Probably not, nor did she claim to be and the original conviction was overturned by the prosecutor entering evidence she was a "common pr******te."

Clara Connelly was found guilty after 5 hours of deliberation by the jury. The standard sentence of 2-15 years was evoked. Clara wanted to go to St. Vincent's, but she was sentence to DEHOCO, Detroit House of Corrections, which is pretty much a field last I drove by. Her judge was sympathetic, though and reduced the sentence to 2-4 years.
