Schools have never had more data. So why is it still so hard to turn that data into action?

Maybe we've been solving the wrong problem.

For decades, schools have invested in better assessments, dashboards, reports, integrations, and now artificial intelligence. The assumption has been simple: if educators have better access to information, better decisions will follow.

But access is only part of the problem.

Every new source of information competes for one limited resource: educator attention.

Teachers and school leaders are asked to locate information across systems, reconcile conflicting signals, interpret increasingly complex displays, remember what they saw, determine what matters, and translate all of it into a decision-often while managing dozens of other demands at the same time.

The result is not necessarily a lack of data. It is a growing amount of work before the work.

In The Attention Gap, Kyle Holder examines the cognitive burden hidden inside the way schools collect, deliver, and use information. He challenges the idea that making more data available is the same as making it useful and offers a different way to think about data-informed decision making: begin with the decision, then design the information environment around the attention required to make it well.

Drawing from years of work with schools and district leaders, Holder explores how organizations can reduce unnecessary cognitive work, make information easier to act on, rethink reports and dashboards, evaluate whether recurring information rituals are worth the attention they consume, and use emerging technologies such as AI without simply creating more noise.

The task in front of schools is no longer just making information available. It is deciding what deserves to be seen, by whom, at what moment, and for what purpose-and then protecting the human attention required to turn that seeing into judgment, and that judgment into care.

The Attention Gap is for educators, school leaders, data teams, technology leaders, and anyone responsible for designing the systems through which people are expected to make better decisions.

Because the goal should never have been more data.

The goal should be better decisions.

For most of my career, I thought schools had a data access problem.

I spent 14 years working with data inside a public school district, then another 12 years building technology to help schools bring their data together and make it easier to use.

And we got pretty good at it.

But somewhere along the way, I started noticing a different problem.

Teachers and school leaders often had the information they needed. What they didn’t have was unlimited time and attention to find it, interpret it, connect it to everything else they knew, and decide what to do next.

That realization eventually became The Attention Gap: Why Schools Don’t Have a Data Problem.

It’s not an argument against data. Quite the opposite. It’s an argument that if we want data to actually improve decisions, we have to start designing around the human beings expected to use it.

I’m excited—and a little nervous—to finally start sharing this.

Coming this fall. Preorders open in September.

For years, we as educators (especially ones that think about data) have viewed the main barrier to data use as access.

So, we make data accessible. But, data use doesn't increase.

What next? At ion, we've found the answer.

Watch the video to see how we are getting insight into the hands of teachers - who need it the most.

Identifying a student who needs support is only the first step.

The real challenge is understanding why they're struggling and knowing what to do next.

Data has a story to tell, but too much friction stands between the data and the people who need to act on it.

At ion, we've simplified that workflow, utilizing your student data and critical KPIs.

Instead of jumping between systems or piecing together information from multiple sources, educators can move from identifying a concern to understanding the student to taking coordinated action—all within a single, connected workflow that requires little setup and minimal training.

Today, we had our Ion Education fusion25 user group conference in Kansas. About 70 educators gathered to network, share and learn.

Right after lunch, our team took the opportunity to recognize two customers for their efforts to promote ion, in both the community and their districts.

Jennifer Davis and James Polk were voted on by our team, and given our inspiration awards.

We are honored to have them as part of the ion family!

Excited to hear from GA Buie of USA|Kansas at the fusion25 conference.
