Congratulations to all of the recipients of the CalRTA Diablo Vista Scholarship! Today Division 52 of the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA), the Diablo Vista chapter, held its annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon, which took place at the Concord Historical Society. I have been a CalRTA member for three years now, and the thing I love most about this organization is that each year it awards scholarships to community college students from Diablo Valley College and Los Medanos College who will be transferring in the fall. During today’s luncheon, the ten scholarship recipients walked up onto the Dave Brubeck Stage (the jazz legend was born in Concord in 1920) to receive their awards and to give presentations, all of which were inspiring and uplifting. And DVC was very well represented at the event. Nine of the ten recipients are from DVC. And there to support them today were Patrick Leong (whom I served on the DVC Scholarship Committee with for 24 years), two DVC English professors, two DVC Puente counselors, and DVC’s president, Dr. Monica Chahal. These ten students will be transferring to UC Irvine; UC Davis; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; and UC Berkeley. At these universities they will major in engineering, biochemistry, law, psychology, sociology, and philosophy. I predict bright futures for all of them! (June 3, 2026)

DVC’s summer semester began yesterday, so these 13 DVC retirees decided to kick off summer by dining al fresco at Jack’s for our monthly lunch together. Faculty from DVC academic departments across campus were there, including a counselor and professors of culinary arts, early childhood education economics, English, computer information systems, mathematics, humanities, art, business, communication studies, and chemistry. Along with delicious food, there were also great conversations about travel, books, theater, music, history, classes we’re taking, and our summer plans. We wish all DVC students a very successful and productive summer semester! (May 27, 2026)

Congratulations Fernando Perez, who will be the student speaker at tonight's DVC graduation ceremony!

Congratulations to our student speaker at this year's Diablo Valley College graduation ceremony, Fernando Perez! 🎓✨ As a first-generation college student who began his journey at DVC just months after surviving cancer, Fernando's story is one of incredible resilience and determination. During his time at DVC, he discovered his passion for the intersection of athletics, psychology, and mental health, a path that will now take him to UC Berkeley, where he will major in Psychology with the goal of working in clinical and sports psychology. Fernando, your courage to share your story and inspire those around you is a true gift to this community. We are so incredibly proud of you and everything you have overcome. Congratulations!
