Contra Costa County Office of Education Contra Costa County has the 11th largest public-school student population in the state (169,394 students).

CCCOE provides direct services to our county's most vulnerable students, including young people who are incarcerated, homeless, or in foster care. Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) is the 9th largest public school student population in California. CCCOE has a long history of providing direct services to some of our county’s most vulnerable students, including adults and young people who are incarcerated, homeless, or in foster care, as well as students who have severe physical or emotional challenges. CCCOE serves 285 schools, 18 school districts, and over 176k students. CCCOE serves as an advocate for education and youth in our county, helps to increase public awareness of educational issues, and leads the way with bold countywide initiatives. CCCOE prepares Contra Costa County students to LEARN, LEAD, and ACHIEVE!

Looking for strategies to strengthen critical thinking, inquiry, and evidence-based writing in your classroom? CCCOE is partnering with The DBQ Project to offer a series of FREE professional development sessions for educators in grades 3-12 this fall.

Participants will explore inquiry-based instruction, civic engagement, and technology tools that support students in reading closely, writing clearly, and communicating effectively.

Description: This series is for district and site administrators to enhance their role as instructional leaders in mathematics. It focuses on developing the knowledge, strategies and systems necessary for leading equitable standards-aligned improvements based on the pedagogy of the California Mathematics Framework.

Dates & Time: 9/25/26, 10/30/26, 11/19/26, 12/10/26; 9:00am-2:00pm

We’re thrilled to celebrate Contra Costa County’s 2026 Teachers of the Year, Rebecca St. Michel and Stephanie Sado!

Rebecca, a fifth-grade teacher at Brentwood Elementary School in the Brentwood Union School District, and Stephanie, a literacy intervention teacher in the Orinda Union School District, are in San Francisco today for an interview at KRON 4 with anchor Reyna Harvey, who served as emcee for last night's Teachers of the Year Celebration at the Concord Hilton.

Rebecca and Stephanie are outstanding representatives of the educators who inspire students every day through their dedication, expertise, and commitment to learning. We are incredibly proud of both of them and look forward to sharing the interview once it becomes available.

Congratulations to Rebecca St. Michel of Brentwood Elementary School in Brentwood Union School District and Stephanie Sado of Orinda Union School District, who have been named the 2026-27 Contra Costa County Teachers of the Year!

Rebecca, a fifth-grade teacher with 27 years of service at Brentwood Elementary, is recognized for creating a classroom where every student feels supported, valued, and capable of success. Drawing from her own experiences overcoming learning challenges, she inspires students to persevere and grow.

Stephanie, a literacy intervention teacher, has helped transform literacy instruction across Orinda Union School District. Through her work with students and staff, she has expanded reading support systems that build confidence, strengthen skills, and foster a love of learning.
Selected from among 22 outstanding educators honored at the 54th Annual Contra Costa County Teachers of the Year Celebration, Rebecca and Stephanie will now represent Contra Costa County in the California State Teacher of the Year competition.

Tonight, we celebrate the educators who inspire, mentor, and prepare students for bright futures. Among them is Benjamin Carpenter, Welding Teacher at Kennedy High School and one of West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Teachers of the Year.

After more than 20 years as a professional fabricator, Benjamin brought his expertise to the classroom, where he helps students develop technical skills, confidence, accountability, and professionalism. His welding program connects students with industry partners, real-world certifications, and hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for careers in the skilled trades.

Benjamin believes technical ability is only part of success. Through his teaching, students build focus, responsibility, work ethic, and the confidence to tackle challenges independently. He takes pride in watching students grow into capable problem-solvers who take ownership of their learning and their future.

In just a few hours, we will honor Benjamin and 21 other district Teachers of the Year at the 54th Annual Contra Costa County Teachers of the Year Celebration at the Concord Hilton. Later this evening, two educators will be selected as Contra Costa County Teachers of the Year and will advance to California’s Teacher of the Year competition.
