Today we observe Juneteenth, commemorating the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
Juneteenth stands as both a celebration and a reminder. It celebrates the perseverance, strength, and contributions of generations of Black Americans. It also reminds us that progress is often incomplete, that freedom and equality have not always been experienced equally, and that understanding our nation's history requires us to acknowledge both its achievements and its shortcomings.
At SUNY Plattsburgh, we have a responsibility to engage honestly with history, not simply to study the past, but to better understand the present and shape the future. Education challenges us to examine whose stories are told, whose voices are remembered, and whose experiences have too often been overlooked. In doing so, we gain a fuller understanding of our communities, our institution, and ourselves.
Juneteenth reminds us that history is not static. It is continually reexamined through new scholarship, new perspectives, and a willingness to confront difficult truths. The pursuit of knowledge requires both intellectual curiosity and humility, along with the recognition that there is always more to learn about our nation, our communities, and one another.
