MCAT Physics practice question β did you get it? Here's the explanation.
The answer is C β the water level remains the same.
Here's why: a floating object displaces water equal to its weight, not its volume (shoutout Archimedes π). So when the ice melts, its mass doesn't change β it just becomes liquid water that fills in exactly the space it was already displacing. Net result? Zero change in water level, no matter how big or small the ice cube is.
The sneaky distractor here is D β your brain wants to make weight matter, but it's actually irrelevant to the outcome. Classic MCAT misdirection.

MCAT Physics practice question β did you get it?
Here's why this one tricks so many students:
To determine the displacement (NOT distance), take the area under the graph.
The 2 similar sized trapezoids, one positive and the other negative, cancel each other. At time C, the diaphragm is back or near to its starting position; hence, its displacement has zero magnitude at that moment.
Save this for your MCAT Physics review β this exact concept shows up on test day.
