The SUNY Plattsburgh food-and-non-consumables pantry Cardinal Cupboard has seen steady increases in usage over the last several years, so much so that several satellite locations have been opened across campus.

Tessa Rogers, student outreach and support coordinator in Access and Opportunities Programs office who is in charge of the cupboard, said her goal is to de-stigmatize asking for help and to facilitate that, she wants to make sure no student experiences food insecurity.

Cardinal Cupboard is a fully stocked market where those who need it can “shop” shelves containing canned goods, cereal and other boxed foods, fruit, spices and cooking supplies, condiments, protein foods, home cleaning and personal hygiene products as well as refrigerated and frozen foods in the cupboard’s two refrigerators and one upright freezer.

A SUNY initiative launched in spring 2024 to increase graduation rates and reduce financial barriers for first-generation and Pell Grant-eligible students has met with continued success at Plattsburgh, according to the program’s director.

SUNY Plattsburgh received more than $900,000 from the state’s $75 million Transformation Fund in fall 2023 to be used over three years to replicate the successful program, modeled successfully by the City University of New York. SUNY Plattsburgh was one of 19 State University of New York campuses across the state to be awarded funding in 2023.

The Advancing Completion through Engagement program provides wrap-around support for first-generation or Pell-eligible students who are not part of other student support programs such as the Educational Opportunity Program or Accessibility Resource Office.

The Saxbys renovations have been underway this summer! 👷 ☕ We are so excited to see this space finished and to have Saxbys apart of Cardinal Country. The grand opening is September 9th! Students will be making breakfast sandwiches, gourmet grilled cheeses, along with specialty espresso, coffee and tea beverages. We can't wait to welcome the campus to the new space and show off what our new student employees can do!

After a national search this past spring semester, Dr. Dottie Morris, associate vice president for community and equity at Keene State College, Keene, N.H., was chosen SUNY vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion, effective July 6.

“Dr. Morris brings extensive experience as a higher education leader, scholar and advocate whose work has focused on fostering inclusive excellence, student success and community engagement,” said President Alexander Enyedi. “We are excited to welcome her to our campus community and look forward to the leadership and perspective she will bring to this important role.”
