While a lot has changed on campus in the 50 years since Jan (Bolton) Legoza ’75 graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh, many of today’s students could surely relate to her Plattsburgh Experience.

A native of Mechanicville, N.Y., she majored in political science with a minor in business administration at Plattsburgh, making her the first in her family to leave home to attend a four-year institution. To help pay for her education, Legoza also held a job in the dining hall for three of her four years on campus.

Still, she made time for some of the same activities that remain popular among today’s students: cheering on the Cardinal hockey team at the Field House, spending time with friends, and grabbing food and drinks at the Monopole.

“With support from my parents, an excellent faculty and a commitment to learning, I was able to build a foundation at Plattsburgh that would shape both my career and my commitment to expanding opportunity for others” said Legoza, who, along with her husband, Rick, recently arranged for a legacy gift to the Plattsburgh College Foundation.

The moments students remember most often begin with opportunities. A breakthrough in the lab. A life-changing internship. A chance to grow as a leader.

These experiences do not happen for no reason.

They happen because alumni, families, faculty, staff and friends choose to support SUNY Plattsburgh students through scholarships, programs and campus opportunities.

During RISE UP RED, your gift helps make these moments possible for the next generation of Cardinals.

Today, SUNY Plattsburgh celebrated the dedication of the Lake Champlain Research Institute’s new research vessel, the R/V Leptodora, at Valcour Inn and Boathouse.

Funded by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the vessel was constructed by Munson Boats, specifically for the institute's research on Lake Champlain. It will support ongoing and future projects, including the Lake Champlain long-term monitoring program, deep lake limnology research, outreach and education initiatives, and many other activities. The vessel will also serve as a floating classroom for students.
