The Senators need to hear that we want freestanding birth centers in Nebraska, and that we need licensure for CPMs so they can staff them! Share your own birth center experience if you have one. See our last post for more details!

Also, please join us in person for the hearing if you can! It will be at 1:30 this Wednesday, December 3rd, in room 1510 at the Capitol. It will NOT be as long as our last hearing was, because testimony is limited. It's the only thing on the schedule that day, so we will not have to wait while other bills are heard - we'll start right at 1:30.

This is our first chance in this session to have Certified Professional Midwives and birth brought before the Senators again. We are only two steps from having a bill for licensure, and we were only two votes from it passing last session. We are THIS 🤏 close to changing birth in our state in a MAJOR way! Let's not give up at the finish line! 🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️

Make sure you educate yourself!

Many newborns get the hepatitis B vaccine within hours of birth, even though the risk of contracting fatal hepatitis B is about 1 in 7 million for children at normal risk of exposure.

Each vaccine dose contains 250 micrograms of aluminum, an amount that’s 75 times greater than the maximum safe level of aluminum in the bloodstream per day for a 7.3-pound infant.

To date, the vaccine hasn’t been proven safer than hepatitis B infection itself. Many new parents want to understand that comparison before making a decision in the first hours after birth.

As ACIP re-examines the hepatitis B vaccine, this data deserves serious attention and thoughtful consideration for what best protects newborns.

Educate yourself then educate your state Senator!

This is one of the handouts we gave to the Senators yesterday, filled with statistics and studies showing the safety of homebirth.

The thing is, most of the Senators have no knowledge of birth, let alone homebirth! They are on committees for agriculture, education, or finance, and understandably, that’s where most of their attention goes. But every one of the 49 Senators will be voting on LB676 soon! It would be very easy for them to vote “no” on something they don’t feel well-educated on, especially when safety is a concern. Of course they just want the people of Nebraska to be as safe as possible - so do we! What they don’t know yet is that homebirth with a midwife IS safe, and that it’s something that Nebraska’s families really want.

👉🏼 That’s where you come in!! Please write to your Senator - or better yet, write to yours and include the 48 others - and let them know 3 things:

1. Homebirth with a midwife IS safe, and we have the studies to prove it.

2. Homebirth is happening in Nebraska already - around 100 families each year choose to give birth at home.

3. Right now the law says that those 200 moms and babies aren’t allowed to have a trained midwife there to help them. We are one of only 12 states that doesn’t license CPMs, and the ONLY state that doesn’t allow CNMs to attend homebirth!

If you haven’t gotten an email sent yet, please do so ASAP! Last week we posted a template and a list of all the Senators’ emails, so that it will be as easy and quick as possible. The emails really do make an impact; even if they don’t respond, their offices keep track of how many contacts they receive in support of a bill.

Please send in an email, and share this post with your friends and family so THEY can email! We made a huge impact with nearly 400 online testimonies in support of LB374… let’s do it again!!
