Congratulations to St. John Alumnus (Class of 1997), Fr. Jason Palermo!

Fr. Jason was presented with the Blessed Michael McGivney Award by the State Knights of Columbus which recognizes a spiritual leader who strengthens faith, inspires action and serves with distinction.

BLESSED MICHAEL J. McGIVNEY MEDAL: Fr. Jason Palermo

Chaplain, St. Alphonsus Liguori Council 2807 (Greenwell Springs, Louisiana).

The Blessed Michael J. McGivney Medal is awarded annually to a Knights of Columbus chaplain whose priestly zeal and exemplary service reflect the highest traditions of the Order’s founder. This “Chaplain of the Year” honor recognizes a spiritual leader who strengthens faith, inspires action, and serves with distinction.

Fr. Jason Palermo is widely recognized by parishioners for deepening the faith of those he serves and elevating the spiritual life of his parishes. Through tireless dedication, he has fostered a culture of active faith, visible both in worship and in community outreach. He is consistently present—supporting parish, school, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic Daughters events—while also expanding ministries to serve those most in need, including the development of a larger food bank.

At his previous assignment in French Settlement, Fr. Jason led numerous transformative efforts. He constructed a baldacchino at St. Joseph Church, established an adoration chapel, and founded a Catholic Daughters court. He enhanced parish life by installing sacred art and statues, building the Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel at Hilltop, and launching the Eucharistic Miracle Project. His leadership also extended to practical improvements, including a new rectory, a mausoleum, upgraded parish facilities, and multiple endowment funds. Notably, he mentored and guided Fr. Matthew Dunn in his journey to the priesthood.

At St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish, Fr. Jason has continued this momentum. He renewed the sanctuary with a new altar, ambo, and sacred furnishings, centralizing the tabernacle to emphasize Eucharistic reverence. He ensured the proper care of sacred vessels through professional restoration and created opportunities for devotion through a relic cabinet and restored Stations of the Cross. His initiatives also include establishing a parish columbarium, reviving pilgrimages, founding a Catholic Daughters court, and organizing a Good Friday Stations of the Cross walk.

Through his leadership, pastoral care, and unwavering commitment to the faith, Fr. Jason Palermo exemplifies the mission and spirit of Blessed Michael J. McGivney.
