Patrolman Scott Winters was shot and killed with his own weapon during a struggle with a violent suspect in the 2700 block of Hammondville Road.

During National Police Week, we pause to remember our very own K9 Zeus, a true hero who gave his life in the line of duty on May 20, 2001.

In the early morning hours, Officer Robert Thomas and K9 Zeus, along with another officer, responded to a burglary alarm at the Medication Station. As Officer Thomas and Zeus entered the business to investigate, gunfire erupted. Officer Thomas was shot and was quickly pulled to safety by the second officer, then rushed to the hospital.

Zeus remained inside as officers ordered the suspect to surrender. When there was no response, tear gas was deployed. Tragically, a fire broke out inside the pharmacy. After the flames were extinguished, Zeus and the suspect were found deceased.

Officer Thomas survived his injuries and is now retired from the Boynton Beach Police Department. K9 Zeus died protecting his partner, his community, and the badge he served with unwavering loyalty.

We will never forget his sacrifice.
