Coaches, comment the word COACH to get connected
Back to school season and swim lessons. Here is what every instructor and parent needs to know right now.
If you are in the middle of teaching a child to swim and they suddenly seem off, more tired than usual, more emotional, more resistant, do not panic. Check the calendar first.
Big schedule changes like going back to school affect children more than most adults give them credit for. Their whole routine just flipped upside down. New classroom. New teacher. New social dynamics. And then they get picked up from school, taken straight to swim lessons, and dropped off again. That is a lot for a little person to process in one day.
Coaches, if you are getting students right after school right now expect some of them to show up tired and emotionally spent. They have not seen their parents all day and now they are with you in the water. Adjust your expectations for this season. Meet them where they are at. The skills will still get done. Just maybe a little more gently for a few weeks.
Parents, same goes for you. If you are practicing with your child at home and things feel harder than usual right now give them some grace. The transition is temporary. The consistency you maintain through it is what matters most.
Take it easy on the kids right now. They are doing a lot.
