Our 5th grade Dual Language students are beginning their Social Studies learning about Indigenous communities of the Americas!
Before diving into our texts, students are using photographs, maps, and visual sources to observe, wonder, ask questions, and make connections. They are using context clues, academic vocabulary, TPR (Total Physical Response), and questioning skills to build meaning and activate what they already know.
This work beautifully reflects the three pillars of Dual Language:
Bilingualism & Biliteracy: Students are building academic vocabulary and making connections between Spanish and English.
Academic Achievement: Students are developing critical thinking skills by observing, making inferences, asking questions, and using evidence to deepen their understanding.
Sociocultural Competence: Students are learning to appreciate and understand Indigenous communities, cultures, environments, and contributions through multiple perspectives.
We love seeing our students use language as a bridge to learning! They aren't just learning new words, they're using language to wonder, investigate, communicate, and make sense of the world around them.
