Since its inception in 1998, Willow Bend Academy has been providing middle school and high school students with the skills to become independent learners. All programs at Willow Bend Academy enable students to focus on their individual instructional needs and progress at their own pace. The student/teacher ratio is 8:1


Each program at Willow Bend Academy is designed to develop self-confidence an

d stimulate an interest in the learning process. At Willow Bend Academy, curriculum is tailored to the individual student’s learning style. Most of the instruction is visual with one to one auditory teaching between the teacher and the student. Certified teachers work individually with students providing assistance and encouragement, which has been shown to be the most effective teaching method. (See FAQ page.) This means that talented students often work ahead of their chronological grade level and often complete more than the minimum number of credits, or meet graduation requirements earlier. Additionally, the student who has some learning differences can be placed so that frustration is minimized and he or she can often regain self-confidence and renew his or her lost love of learning. Much of the time in a conventional school is non-productive. At Willow Bend Academy, we seek to make every minute count. Most students come at 8:15 a.m. and leave at 12:15 p.m. or they may arrive at 1:00 p.m. and leave at 5:00 p.m. However, students with special scheduling needs are accommodated as needed. Willow Bend Academy draws its faculty from among the most caring, interested and talented teachers in the area. Willow Bend Academy requires its teachers to hold at least a Bachelors Degree with a college specialty in a related teaching field. All faculty receive training in the specific methods for developing students into independent learners who set and achieve personal academic goals.

A number of schools across the nation realize that individualized learning is far superior to the traditional “seat time” model. However, teachers and administrators are struggling with the transition. Many professional development courses now focus on assisting schools with making the change.

One school - Willow Bend Academy in Plano, Texas - is well experienced with individualized learning. We have been doing it for nearly 20 years. Technology has brought about some changes in the practice, but face-to-face, personal instruction is still the major benefit students enjoy at Willow Bend Academy.

The beauty of the concept is that special needs students do not need to be isolated from their peers. The same is true of gifted and talented students. Individualized learning allows each student to progress at their own rate, achieving mastery of one concept before advancing to the next.

Even students who had given up on high school graduation have earned their diplomas and have become productive citizens, often with college degrees. Graduates have become responsible parents, members of the military, and various civilian occupations to include corporate executives and business owners.
