As with all the Montessori materials, there is much more going on with the child’s work than might appear to the casual observer.
Among the first in the sensorial materials, the Knobbed and Knobless Cylinders set the stage for a progression of exercises that train the senses, encourage attention, and develop intelligence; in short, exercises that indirectly prepare the child for later work in language, mathematics, and all future academic endeavors.
Benefits from working with cylinders include the development of:
- Skills in visual discrimination
- Sequencing and seriation skills
- Precision
- New vocabulary
To learn more, read the article titled "The Montessori Knobbed Cylinders: Introducing the Young Child to Changes in Dimension" and check out our new series about Montessori materials on the Montessori Life blog. https://bit.ly/3H7Uc2b

“The real preparation for education is the study of one’s self. The training of the teacher who is to help life is something far more than the learning of ideas. It includes the training of character; it is a preparation of the spirit.”
– Maria Montessori
Did you know this year’s Montessori Experience will focus on spiritual preparation?

🎂We celebrated our school’s birthday last week : 12 incredible years of serving the Healthy Beginnings community!
🎂We want to reflect on this time by celebrating each individual that has been apart of our journey- parents who have volunteered or donated, our committed staff, and the children ( both alumni & current).
🎂As a small school, each year brings trials and tribulations, and it's through the support of our community, we can learn and grow from these valuable lessons.
🎂Since our owners Ms.Bini and Ms.Tami came together to foster the dream of building an authentic Montessori school; Healthy Beginnings’ mission has always been- To nurture self-confident learners who feel empowered to problem solve, collaborate and lead. Encourage ideas like free-thinking, personal responsibility, compassion, and communal harmony. To learn to live in peace with self, family, community, and earth.
🎂Thank you to each & everyone who has been part of our journey through the 12 years …. Cheers to many more years of serving the children & the community.

🎃It sure feels like Fall here at school ….
🎃Our children are so excited to bring in their pumpkins and decorate them with paint, stickers, yarn, googly eyes, glitter etc
🎃Some children got big pumpkins, some got little ones, some got white while some got orange ….
🎃Children are provided the materials and encouraged to decorate their pumpkins based on their own interest and creativity.
🎃Art is one of the many ways children express themselves. Art is a way for children to communicate their feelings
🎃It is through art that children develop their fine motor skills
🎃 Choosing which pumpkin to buy at the store ….. carrying the pumpkin to class …. Decorating it the way they want to … fosters so many skills in the children. Decision making , purposeful movement, maximum effort, art exploration, sensory feel of materials and so much more .
🎃One of our primary students also got an “extra pumpkin” just in case to give to a friend who may have forgotten to bring one for themselves. She was so excited to share it with a friend who forgot to bring her own.
What a lovely gesture of kindness?

☀️ One of our primary friends used the lovely seasons and months of the year printables from to create the seasons wheel
🌧 These printables are very realistic and colorful
❄️ Children practice cutting and gluing in addition to learning the names of the months& seasons
🍁We also read books and discussed the characteristics of the different seasons
🌸The best part is when children make the association between the activity inside the classroom to what they observe when they are out in nature
🌿A great visual activity to understand the abstract concept of seasons & month

Construction update: Our School construction is coming along well and progress is being made daily.
Some of our cabinets are being installed ,doors are being hung and floors are being laid this week.
Countertops are on back -order. We are exploring alternate vendors for them, but unfortunately there is material shortage currently.
With the delays in procuring the materials and labor shortage, based on contractor timeline and inspections that need to happen after everything is complete, we are hoping for a mid-November opening.
Thank you everyone for your patience & understanding. We are grateful and are doing everything we possibly can to ensure a quick, smooth transition back to our school campus.
We look forward to putting the school back together and welcoming the children to their new communities.

🌱Today, August 31st is Dr. Maria Montessori’s birthday.
🌱We honor her and are thankful that she developed a revolutionary education method and way of life that benefits so many children around the world.
🌱We celebrated her life by doing a “Montessori celebration of life” using the seasons Mat, sun and Earth(globe) at school today.
🌱Children used golden beads material in the math area to create ‘151’ to mark Dr. Maria Montessori ‘s 151st birthday
🌱Children took turns going around the sun and recalled her legacy /contributions after each turn.
🌱The basic founding principle of Montessori philosophy is “Follow the child” and the ultimate goal is to “foster independence “ in the children.
What are some things you like about Montessori? Let us know in the comments below.

Movement Enhances Learning - Montessori Services
https://www.montessoriservices.com/ideas-insights/movement-enhances-learning
Movement is one of the most essential elements in a Montessori environment. Movement strengthens memory and learning.
This is why we have no assigned seats. Children move freely. Our math and language work, for example, is concrete material. Instead of memorizing how to count to 10 or our ABCs, children use materials such as math rods and sandpaper numbers for tracing to tangibly understand the reason for something. From here, they build a foundation that is deeply rooted in genuine knowledge from which they continue to expand. These continued lessons continue up to the 3rd-grade level in our classrooms, allowing students to excel and advance when they are ready without limitations that we often see in public school settings.
Movement Enhances Learning - Montessori Services
"If you wish to give the means to the child for his development you must give them in such a way that the child can, and must move. ...In all her books, lectures, conversations, Montessori incessantly returns to this great theme of the importance of movement." - E.M. Standing "Maria Montessori, Her....
