Karate Words of the Week: 守破離 — Su Ha Ri
Follow • Break • Transcend
Su Ha Ri (守破離), a Japanese concept that describes the journey from student to mastery.
守 — Su | Follow
First, we learn by following. We study the teachings of our instructors, practice the fundamentals, and faithfully follow the traditions of our art. This is where we build a strong foundation.
破 — Ha | Break
Once the fundamentals are deeply understood, we begin to break beyond them. We question, explore, and adapt what we have learned. We aren’t abandoning the principles—we are learning how to make them our own.
離 — Ri | Transcend
Finally, we transcend the form. The techniques become natural, and we are no longer consciously thinking about every movement. We express the principles freely, guided by experience, understanding, and intuition.
Su Ha Ri reminds us that mastery isn’t about abandoning what we were taught. It’s about learning it so deeply that we can eventually move beyond the form while preserving its essence.
As karateka, our journey is not simply about earning the next belt. It is about continually learning, growing, and deepening our understanding of the art.
Keep training. Keep learning. Keep growing. 🥋
