About the Plainville Public Library:
On October 8, 1894, the citizens of Plainville voted to establish a free public library, to be housed in the Town Hall (the Pierce Street building currently used by the Historical Society.) A new Library building on East Main Street

was opened in 1931 and housed a collection of 4,813 books. By 1941, overcrowding on the main floor led to a relocation of the Children's Room to a redesigned space in the basement, but continued growth made a 1962 addition necessary. The new space housed the Children's Room, a meeting room and two floors of book stacks for adults. Three more decades found the library again bursting at the seams, and, in July of 2001, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to begin work on a new addition. A dedication ceremony on September 19, 2004 celebrated the opening of the expanded building, which features stack space for 128,000 books, three meeting rooms for use by the library and by community groups, and a colorful, spacious Children's Room. Focal to the renovation is the restored 1931 section of the building, with marble fireplaces, oak bookcases and pillars, and comfortable seating.

This summer, the library hosted a special performance of "The Bad Seed" Play, written and directed by Carol Glynn and based on the books by Jory John and Pete Oswald!

We want to thank the UBI Federal Credit Union for funding this wonderful program, as well as Carol Glynn for her hard work putting on this show. Congratulations to the cast on an unforgettable performance!

Earlier this month, we were thrilled to welcome acrobat Li Liu to the Plainville Public Library for an incredible performance.

Li began training in acrobatics when she was six years old, and since then, she has traveled all over the world with circus troupes and as a solo performer. Her solo show at the library included hand balancing, plate spinning, ribbon dancing, and more. She also shared about aspects of Chinese language and culture, and a few lucky audience members had the chance to try out plate spinning and ribbon dancing! Thank you to Li Liu and everyone who joined us for this exciting program.

The library is getting a new roof!

Construction is set to begin in the next few weeks. During this time, some parking spaces close to the building may be temporarily blocked off to allow space for staging of construction materials and dumpsters. During construction, the library will remain open during our regular hours.

Thank you for your patience as we work to update our building.
