Zion Plainview hosted the "San Francisco Bay to Brooklyn, New York" bike riders on Friday and Saturday (August 21-22). Twenty-two cyclists, all Firemen, are traveling across the USA (100 miles per day for 30 days) in honor of the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. The local fire station provided a meal on Friday evening. Zion provided beds and a cool place to sleep in our fellowship hall. Zion prepared a feast on Saturday morning (6am) prior to the cyclist's departure as they headed to Iowa and eventually to New York "Ground Zero" by September 11. Pastor Cartwright prepared a devotion for the riders on Saturday focusing on "tetelestai" (it is finished). Teddy Roosevelt's piece on "The Critic" was mentioned. In that piece Roosevelt challenges the critic to cease, and rather to engage in the hard work of "doing" (not just criticizing). Jesus "finished" the hard work of salvation. This was proclaimed clearly. The men, their support crew, and the volunteers at Zion all prayed together and formed lifetime friendships. The website on the side of their trailer can link you up to their efforts. What a great way to care for the weary traveler, our local firemen, and our community in genera.
