Yosh*ta Chandrani was born and brought up in the cultural city of Baroda, Gujarat, India. She was inspired by her parents to learn classical music at a very young age of 11. She started learning Sitar under the tutelage of Guru Shri Sagar. After initiation into the music and the technique of the instrument, she was groomed for the next 15 years under Gurus Shri Gopalbhai Mi
stry and his elder brother Shri Kanubhai Mistry, then Head of the Sitar department in the College of Indian Music, Dance and Dramatics of M.S.University, Baroda. She also had the privilege of learning Kirana Gharana style of Music under Shri Shrikant Mule which instilled in her heart not only the technical aspect of playing Sitar but the spiritual and melodic aspect of music. During her early years she attained “Sangeet Visharad” from Akhil Bruhad Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Gujarat Samiti. After completing her Graduation in Architecture, she earned degrees of Bachelors in Music ( B-Mus.-Sitar), and Masters of Performing Arts (M.P.A.-Sitar) from M.S.University, Baroda. When in India, Yosh*ta was also an All India Radio Artist. She recorded many programs for “Yuva Vani” after winning college competitions in M.S.University. Yosh*ta has performed in Baroda-India, in Kisumu and Nairobi- Kenya where she moved after marriage. She has also performed at Rutgers University, Marathi Vishwa and for private programs in New Jersey, USA. Currently she teaches Sitar in Plainsboro, NJ to enthusiastic kids and adults. According to her, Hindustani Music is a spiritual journey through spatial imagination, with the help of musical notes of the ragas. It is divine and is not for worldly entertainment but to invoke and lovingly pamper the emotions of the mind and soul.
