🔥October 5 Prescribed Fire Operations 🔥
The Lolo National Forest plans to implement prescribed fire operations across multiple districts today, as weather and fuels conditions allow.

📍Ninemile Ranger District: The 74-acre Peppy le Deux unit is located one mile southwest of Huson. Smoke may be visible from the communities of Huson, Alberton, and Ninemile, as well as from Interstate 90.

📍Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District: Firefighters plan to burn up to 33 acres in the Two Short project area located 4 miles west of Thompson Falls. Smoke may be visible from Thompson Falls.

Today October 1st, is the start of open burning. We ask that you burn with the utmost safety this Fall. Open burning runs until December 1st, at that time you'll need to acquire an air quality burn permit through the DEQ.

Remember to always have water with you and don't leave your piles unattended.

🔥 Marmot Peak Fire Update – September 30🔥

Location: 11 miles northeast of Thompson Falls, MT

Size: 95 acres
Containment: 30%
Total Personnel: 50

Command of the fire has transitioned from the local Type 3 Incident Management Team to a Type 4 organization on the Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District of the Lolo National Forest.

Residual heat remains in pockets of smoldering fuels throughout the fire area. Crews continue with mop‑up operations along established hand and dozer lines, supported by two skidgines and a hose lay as they work to extinguish remaining hot spots.

🔥 Marmot Peak Fire Update – September 24 🔥

Location: 11 miles northeast of Thompson Falls, MT
Start Date: 9/21/2026
Cause: Human
Size: 59 acres
Total Personnel: 90

The Marmot Peak Fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain. Fire behavior includes active ground fire with single-tree torching in timber.

Crews were able to reach the fire on foot yesterday and will continue scouting today as they begin constructing both direct and indirect fire line with support from aerial resources. Dozers are actively improving road access to support future water-handling operations, and crews are also evaluating opportunities to use the dozers for additional fire line construction.
