📣 Plains ISD School Board Recap – August Regular Meeting

The Plains ISD Board of Trustees held its regular August meeting this week as we begin the 2026–2027 school year!

We hope everyone has had a great first week of school. It’s good to have our students and staff back in the building, and we’re excited about what lies ahead this year!

Construction & District Updates

Mr. Mills updated the Board on the progress of our bond construction projects. Concrete is now being poured for the new field house, marking another exciting step forward as that project continues to take shape.

The new scoreboard is also up in the east end zone! Work will continue with fiber being run to the board soon as we prepare to have it fully operational.

The district also continues working with the Plains City Council on completing the area surrounding our new tennis courts. We appreciate the continued cooperation as we work to finish out this project and make the entire area something our students and community can enjoy for years to come.

Action Items Approved

The Board approved a clarification to the district’s provisions regarding accumulated leave payments upon retirement. The language adopted last year did not accurately reflect the Board’s intent, so this action corrected the wording and ensures the policy is properly documented moving forward.

The Board approved a quote from P&T Paving and Dirt Work, LLC to pave the area outside the perimeter of the new tennis courts. This is another important step toward completing the overall tennis complex and improving the appearance, accessibility, and functionality of the facility.

The Board approved the purchase of a new PA system for school-wide use. This equipment will be available for activities and events across the district and will be especially beneficial to our band program and students.

The Board approved the district’s annual request to TEA for a Staff Professional Development Waiver, allowing five professional development days to be incorporated into the school calendar without counting against required student instructional minutes. These days give our teachers valuable time throughout the year to focus on training, instructional planning, and continued professional growth.

The Board approved the 2026–2027 Student and Family Handbook, Student Code of Conduct, and Sexual Abuse Prevention Plan for the new school year.

The Board also approved a revision to the 2026–2027 school calendar, exchanging the previously scheduled September professional development day and school holiday. September 21 will now be a school holiday, and September 25 will be a professional development day.

The Board approved the purchase of Lowman Education curriculum and instructional materials for core subjects in grades 3–10. Plains ISD has successfully used Lowman materials for the past two school years, and this represents a significant expansion of the curriculum across the district. The goal is to provide greater consistency and alignment in our core subjects as students progress from one grade level to the next.

The Board also approved the 2026–2027 teacher salary and stipend schedule and At-Will Salary Schedule. We appreciate the tremendous work of the people who serve our students every day and remain committed to supporting and retaining quality educators and staff at Plains ISD.

A Great Start to the Year!

We also want to congratulate Mr. Davis and our Plains Elementary teachers and staff on improving the campus accountability rating from a D to a C! That improvement represents a lot of hard work by our teachers, staff, students, and families, and we’re proud to see that work moving our elementary campus in the right direction.

There is plenty of work ahead, but there is also a lot to be excited about. We’re glad to have our Cowboys and Cowgirls back, and we look forward to another great year at Plains ISD!
