CPAC presents Transition Tuesday: Community-Based Transition Services for Students with Disabilities with Dr. Patricia Anderson

The Transition Bill of Rights provides information regarding transition services for parents of students receiving special education services in grades 6 – 12, including community-based services for students who are 18-22. This session will offer an opportunity for parents and their young adults to explore the components of a variety of “transition-only” options, when these services are appropriate for an individual student, and how and when to request such services through the IEP/PPT process. Participants will learn how to structure IEP transition goals and objectives to support requests for community-based services. Resources will be discussed. As families continue to cope with pandemic struggles, parents are now facing the challenge of talking with children about recent frightening and confusing events in our national government. We are sharing resources on our private, monitored page to help parents talk about these topics and hosting several relevant classes this week. Please share upcoming classes:

http://www.peaceathomeparenting.com/upcoming-classes/

Parents can go to this link and register for each class directly. Remember to share your free code when you share the above upcoming classes link. You may want to remind parents that during live classes parents may talk directly with experts and get solutions on the spot. And if they miss the class, they will receive a link to the recorded session and all handouts. Here's what's coming up:

"Set the Stage for Cooperative Co-Parenting: Support Your Children," 8:15 PM, Monday, 1/11 - High conflict couples specialist, Jennifer Dealy, PhD, LMFT helps separated and divorced parents get on the same page during these difficult times.

"Be Your Child's Calm Center," 8:15 PM, Tuesday, 1/12 - Aaron Weintraub, MS is the Director of the much loved program for children with special needs, "Kids Cooperate." Aaron will guide parents in not only understanding how to support children to reduce stress, but the importance of parents learning their own brain calming practices as well. This is a perfect antidote to the drama unfolding at the national level as well as the everyday difficulties families face as COVID-19 continues to spread.

"Establece un Ambiente de Cooperación," 8:15 PM, Wednesday, 1/13 - "Set the Stage for Cooperation" will be taught in Spanish by seasoned bilingual, bi-cultural parenting educator, Joyleen Albarracin, MA. Joyleen will help parents understand how routines, co-regulation and building a positive relationship are all essential elements in positive discipline for children.
"Become Your Child's Sleep Coach: Help Your Child Become a Great Sleeper," 6:00 PM, Thursday, 1/14 - Director of Connecticut Children's Medical Center Pediatric Sleep Program, Lynelle Schneeberg, PhD will help parents develop evidence-based sleep routines that work. Sleep disturbance among both children and parents is on the rise during these difficult times and this class is a must for parents struggling to help children get to sleep and stay asleep.

"Picky Eating 101: Make Mealtimes Enjoyable Again," 8:15 PM, Thursday, 1/14 - Early childhood expert Cora Megan, MA will help parents of toddlers and preschoolers recognize ways to help kids develop healthy eating behaviors and end the mealtime power struggles.

Any professionals working with parents in Peace At Home towns may join tomorrow's Free Professional Consultation Group which I conduct at noon on the second Tuesday of every month. We will start this week's session with a question raised by one of our CSO colleagues - How do professionals discuss children's challenging behaviors with parents without implying judgement, shame or blame. Professionals may email cases in advance to me at [email protected] and register in that way. They may also register here and please share attached announcement.

And finally, please remind parents that they can contact our Peace At Home parenting guides by clicking on the button at the bottom left of your login page and we will help them find the right class or blog to meet their needs.

Please don't hesitate to email us at info@peaceathomeparenting with questions or parent challenges. We will be happy to hear from you.

Take good care of yourself this week.

Evening Plainfield Community-

We hope everyone had a nice winter break and nice New Year!!!

The year 2020 brought unforeseen challenges that we will only grow from, learn from, and become stronger from. 2021 will present new challenges for us as a school district, with our main focus of returning to normal, high-quality instruction as possible, while addressing the diverse needs of all of our students. The global pandemic and impacts of will be something we will be addressing for years to come. This challenge we will not take lightly because our students, your kids, require us to tackle these unique challenges we now face. We enter this new year with hope, energy and a revitalized determination to always do our best for the kids of Plainfield.

It is important now, more than ever, to continue your communication with us regarding any potential or confirmed cases over the winter break and weeks to come. Transparently, Windham County and indirectly Plainfield is the state’s new hotspots. Cases are increasing, but our mitigation measure remain intact and we continue to see minimal spread of COVID within our schools. We are, however, continuing to be impacted by community spread, so communication with us about any potential or confirmed cases is essential for us to remain open.

FREE MEALS: Meals will continue to be provided at PHS, PCMS and MES. On Thursday’s – B Day families can pick up extra meals for the week and on Friday’s – A Day families can pick up the same meals. It is important for us to continue to provide this service and support.

You can find updated state and local COVID data below. As always, if you have any questions please reach out.

Several Important Reminders:

CT Travel Restrictions-As you plan your holiday travel please be aware of Connecticut’s current travel restrictions. Please communicate directly with your child’s school is impacted by the travel restrictions. More information can be found here: https://portal.ct.gov/coronavirus/travel
Ongoing Communication with Schools-Even though we are on remote across the district, it is important to maintain communication with your child’s school concerning any COVID impact (Positive cases, Primary contact with COVID individual, etc. ) Families have done a tremendous job communicating with families and respecting symptoms in their children and keeping them home. This needs to continue during this time period as well as there is ongoing potential of contact to your child’s cohort and school regarding any cases.
Face Covering Policy- The BOE approved a first reading of a face covering policy. Plainfield will implement a mandatory face covering policy across the district. Yes, the State Department of Education released Addendum regarding face coverings, however we felt it necessary to institute a specific policy regarding face masks. To review the first reading of the face mask policy you can access at our website under BOE policies-First Readings, here: https://www.plainfieldschools.org/board_of_education/boe_policies/public_first_reading

Important District Mitigation Measures

Short-Term Closure-Quarantine a class, program or school for a short period of time to allow for deep cleaning and/or testing. This would be done if we receive notifications of multiple potential cases or multiple primary contacts within one location
Quarantine Closure-14 day quarantine is required of an individual who is a primary contact (someone who had long-term exposure to a COVID positive individual). This would be done if a student’s parent tests positive or if an individual in our community tests positive and was directly linked to a classroom/s or program/s
Self-Isolation-10 day isolation is required if an individual test’s positive for COVID. That individual can return to the school community after the 10 period, with a negative test and 24 hours of being symptom free

These steps are taken and have been taken to mitigate any spread of COVID within our schools. It is very important for parents and school community members to communicate openly and honestly with their children’s schools about any potential or confirmed exposure.

Connecticut Department of Education Leading Indicators

( source: https://data.ct.gov/stories/s/CT-School-Reopening/ddy2-ijgu/ )

The learning model indicator metrics were originally calculated using a 7-day average. Starting on 10/15/2020, the metrics will be calculated using a 14-day average. We are learning more about COVID-19 all the time, including the best ways to measure COVID-19 activity in our communities. CT DPH made the decision to shift to 14-day rates because these are more stable, particularly at the town level, as compared to 7-day rates. In addition, since the school indicators were initially published by DPH last summer, CDC has recommended 14-day rates and other states (e.g., Massachusetts) have started to implement 14-day metrics for monitoring COVID transmission as well.

Leading Indicator #1 Definition: Number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 population per day (14-day average)

COVID Reminders and Resources

REMEMBER: COVID-19 is spread mainly via person-to-person contact through contaminated air droplets from coughing and sneezing by an infected person. As with controlling the spread of other viruses, we urge everyone to discuss the following preventive measures with your children and family members:

· Wash your hands frequently, but especially after using the restroom and before preparing or consuming food. Using soap and hot water, wash for about 20 seconds. Be sure to also wash your fingertips. When soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.

· Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands or in the air. Always try to cough or sneeze into a tissue, then throw the tissue away. If you don’t have a tissue, cough/sneeze inside the elbow of your arm.

· As much as you can, avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.

· Wear a face covering (mask) whenever there is a likelihood that you or your family members will be in the presence of others.

· Maintain social distancing (at least 6 feet) between yourself and others when outside of your home.

Below is the list of COVID-19 symptoms for which everyone should monitor in their family members:

❑ Fever (100.4° Fahrenheit or higher)

❑ Chills or shaking chills

❑ Uncontrolled new cough (not due to other known cause, such as chronic cough)

❑ Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

❑ New loss of taste or smell

We hope you are able to ease into post-holiday work life with some good memories and some reasons for hope. Each of you is in some way serving struggling families so please remember we are here to help. We are challenging our teachers to help parents recognize the most essential ways they can support themselves and their children and also recognize those non-essential tasks we can release in order to be the calm center our kids need.

As you know too well, many parents are discouraged at this moment as remote learning returns and juggling conflicting roles continue. CDC Director Robert Redfield reports that the winter months "are going to be the most difficult in the public health history of this nation." Please let us know how we can help you help parents.

Here is a good place to start. Our first week of live classes will focus on several basics and an opportunity to connect with teachers directly. Remember to include your Subscription Code when sharing upcoming classes live classes with your parents:

http://www.peaceathomeparenting.com/upcoming-classes/

Some live class highlights:
"Taming Tantrums: Recognize Triggers and Plan Ahead" - 12 noon, Thursday, 1-7-21 Parents of young children are reporting increased meltdowns and JoAnn Robinson, PhD has simple, evidence-based strategies to bring down the emotional temperature of both kids and parents.
"Easy Meal Prep for Busy Parents" - 8:15 PM, Thursday, 1-7-21. Wellness expert and mother of two under 5, Stephanie Rondeau, MS, LAT, ATC will offer realistic approaches to keep those New Year's resolutions for stressed families. With a masters degree in nutrition and daily challenges as a working mom of two, Stephanie makes a big difference for parents who can't imagine getting back to a healthy lifestyle.
"School Success: Inspire Motivation without Taking Over" - 12 noon, Friday, 1-8-21. Amy Alamar, EdD, translates what research tells us are best practices in teaching to help parents guide children to engage positively in school...without becoming homework police or worse. Many parents are seeing previously engaged students lose interest and others worry about their challenged students falling further behind. Amy will help parents recognize what is most important to support students stay engaged in the ways that are right for them.
Please also remind parents to bring their concerns to our private Facebook group where candid issues are raised and support from peers and professionals is quickly available. I am also answering more and more questions at our monthly Q&A - parents can join this month's session at 12 noon on Tuesday, January 26th. They can jump on for support and depart as soon as they get the answer they need.

Thank you for your faith in our work. We look forward to an inspiring year of collaboration with our Peace At Home partners on behalf of parents and children.
