Who is the G.O.A.T. of the Mongol Empire? AP World students at PHS were ready to make their case!

During Mongol Madness, groups selected a Mongol ruler and researched leadership and conquests, government and administration, trade and cultural exchange, foreign relations, treatment of conquered peoples, and lasting legacy. Then came the challenge: use the evidence to persuade their classmates that their ruler deserved G.O.A.T. status.

And because every great contender needs an entrance, each group also selected a walk-up song that represented its ruler before taking the stage!

The winning arguments belonged to Möngke Khan in 4th period, Genghis Khan in 5th, and Hülegü Khan in 6th.

Research, historical thinking, communication, and a little friendly competition made for a memorable day in AP World!

Sometimes the best way to analyze a speech is to hear it come to life!

Students in English 10 at PHS are reading Antigone and digging into the rhetoric behind the words. A few brave Quakers stepped into the roles of Creon and the Guard while their classmates listened for examples of ethos, pathos, and logos in their speeches.

Reading, performing, and analyzing all came together as students explored how characters use language to persuade an audience. A great way to make an ancient text feel a little more alive!

Is there a better way to introduce projectile motion? We’re not sure there is!

Students in AP Physics 1 at PHS jumped into a new unit by putting projectile motion into action. Instead of starting with equations on the board, students got a chance to see the physics first, make observations, and begin asking questions about what determines an object’s path through the air.

Sometimes the best way to learn physics is to launch something and figure out why it went where it did!

A little taste of France at PHS!

French Club had a great turnout as students put their creativity to work building their own versions of the Eiffel Tower using pretzels and marshmallows. After testing their construction skills, students learned more about the history behind one of France’s most recognizable landmarks.

A fun afternoon of culture, creativity, and connection for our Quakers! 🇫🇷

Students in AP Biology at PHS explored surface area-to-volume ratios with a hands-on activity that helped them visualize why cell size matters. As cells grow larger, it becomes more difficult to efficiently absorb the nutrients they need and remove waste.

Students connected their observations to an important biological question: Why do cells divide? At a certain size, dividing allows a cell to increase its surface area relative to its volume and continue functioning efficiently.

Physics in action, with a little help from ancient engineering!

Students in AP Physics 2 at PHS explored the science behind a Hero’s engine, bringing several physics concepts together in one challenge. Along the way, they applied their understanding of projectile motion, pressure and temperature, Newton’s Third Law force pairs, inertia, and thermal conductivity.

It’s one thing to study these concepts individually. It’s another to see how they work together to make something move! A great example of our Quakers connecting classroom physics to engineering and design.

How far can your muscles go before fatigue takes over?

Students in PLTW Human Body Systems (HBS) at PHS are putting that question to the test. Using gas pressure sensors and EMGs, students measured hand grip strength and collected data on muscle activity as fatigue began to set in.

Next, they’ll analyze their results to determine whether the body can push beyond muscle fatigue. It’s a great combination of physiology, technology, and data analysis as our Quakers learn more about how the human body responds to a challenge.

It’s all fun and games… and a little bit of English class, too! 🚢⚓️

Ever read a page of a book and immediately forget what you just read? Our Plainfield High School freshmen know the feeling!

After hearing students say they complete their readings but struggle to remember or digest the details, Mrs. Jolly decided to bring back a classic study superpower: annotation!

By leaving simple “breadcrumbs”—short notes and key ideas written in their own words after every few paragraphs—students create a roadmap back to their own understanding.

To test out their new skills with a recent nonfiction article tied to their short stories unit, English class leveled up the lesson with a game of Annotated Battleship!

The Setup: Each student’s breadcrumb annotations became hidden “ships” on a game grid.

The Play: When an opponent scored a coordinate hit, both players read their annotations for that exact section of the text aloud.

The Match: If their notes shared similar meaning, it was a direct hit + a bonus shot! If their takeaways differed, students paused to discuss the contrast before moving on to the next round.

Hands-on reading comprehension, lively literary debate, and a little friendly competition? Now that’s how you sink self-doubt and anchor great study habits! 💡📚

What happens on the Sun doesn’t always stay on the Sun! ☀️🌍

PHS students explored space weather and the surprising ways activity in space can affect life on Earth. Topics ranged from technology disruptions and aviation safety to auroras, astronaut radiation exposure, and even animal migration.

Each student became the expert on a different phenomenon and then shared their learning through a professional presentation featuring clear visuals and real-world examples.

This was a great opportunity for our Quakers to practice an important Plainfield Advantage skill: communicating complex ideas clearly and confidently to an audience.

Celebrating creativity, talent, and work ethic at PHS!

The Armstrong Art Award is presented three times each semester to young artists who demonstrate both outstanding artistic ability and a strong commitment to their craft.

Congratulations to our first recipients of the semester: Oliver Manzaneres, AP Studio; Trinity Helbert and Lilliana Shrake, Painting One; and Lyric Renzie-Burndine and Adalyn Nelson, Photography One.

We are proud of the creativity these Quakers bring to our classrooms and, just as importantly, the work they put into developing their talents. Congratulations to each of our Armstrong Art Award recipients!
