Let’s talk about the WYSO’s Youth Symphony and Chamber Ensembles!
The Youth Symphony is comprised of strings, winds, brass, and percussion musicians who have at least one year of experience with their instrument. Semester fees are $195, and that covers all 15 meetings, including our spring concert, which is free to the public. Students are often offered other performance opportunities during the semester.
Chamber Ensembles are formed based on instrument availability and skill level. Your musician may find themself in a string quartet or an instrument duo or trio. The focus of this rehearsal session is to develop deep listening skills, to build leadership and collaborative skills, and to encourage musical independence. And to have fun!

How much will it cost if my student wants to be in both groups?
It is $225 to participate in either of the large ensembles (Beginner Strings or Youth Symphony) and Chamber Ensembles. Please discuss with us if your student wanted to, say, learn violin and also play their more advanced instrument with the symphony.
If my student is in Symphony, should they be in Chamber Ensembles also?
Absolutely! There are different skills accessed in each of these groups. The more intimate setting in chamber groups means each musician’s part is more enhanced. Also, musical selection is student driven, which leads to greater enthusiasm for the music played, which leads to better musicianship.
Can my student participate only in Chamber Ensembles?
Absolutely! Whether the musician is more of a beginner or an advanced student, this rehearsal offers the opportunity for every level to make music collaboratively.
My musician already plays in the band. What benefits are there to playing in the symphony?
Even for strong band musicians, joining the symphony expands your musical skill set. Orchestras give you expanded repertoire and style. Also, participation in the WYSO offers you a resume or college app advantage because it demonstrates versatility, commitment, and time management skills.
