I had a call from someone who wanted lessons, but not guitar lessons. She sang in a large choral group of women called "The Sweet Adelines" who performed at various functions or events. She confided in me that when the leader/conductor handed out the sheet music to all the members, she felt intimidated and had no idea what "all the dots" meant. She just wanted to know what she was looking at.

I taught her how to count time in 4/4, 3/4 time, as well as cut time. Pick up notes, quarter notes, half notes, dotted and tied notes, and so on. Oftentimes, you can "hear" the song if you count note values from measure to measure. After a couple of lessons, we used a metronome set at a low bpm so we could get the feel for the rhythm of note value. Eventually, we started working on pitch and intervals. She was a great student.
