What makes an exercise Pilates — and not simply an abdominal exercise?
Pilates is not only about the movement itself. It is also about how you perform it.
The method emphasizes:
✨ Breath: Connecting breath with movement to support control, deepen core connection, and create rhythm throughout the exercise.
✨ Concentration: Bringing full attention and awareness to each movement, creating a deeper connection between mind and body.
✨ Control: Moving with intention and stability, maintaining command of the body through every phase of the movement.
✨ Precision: Performing each movement with intentional alignment, placement, and attention to detail for maximum effectiveness.
✨ Centering: Movement begins from your center, creating a strong, stable foundation for the rest of the body to move with control.
✨ Flow: Moving with rhythm and continuity, allowing each movement to transition smoothly and purposefully into the next.
Instead of rushing through repetitions, you pay attention to alignment, connection, and the quality of each movement.
The goal is not to complete as many repetitions as possible.
The goal is to move with intention and teach the whole body to work together.

The hardest option is not always the smartest option.
The best choice is the one that allows you to:
Move with control.
Maintain your alignment.
Breathe.
Feel the work in the intended muscles.
Stay connected to your body.
Sometimes that means taking the challenge.
Sometimes it means choosing more support, decreasing your range of motion, lowering the weight, or taking a break.
Knowing what your body needs is not a step backward.
That awareness is a skill — and it is one worth building.

Build your ideal OPB class:
Barre, Pilates, strength, yoga, Zumba?
Morning or evening?
Throwback playlist or current music?
No weights, light weights or heavier weights?
Extra glutes, extra core, or extra thighs?
More props or keep it simple?
Long final stretch or straight to savasana?

We can't wait to see what you create! 🩷

A huge congratulations to longtime OPB member Kerri on completing her 250th class! 💪🎉

Kerri, we’re so grateful for the energy, strength, and commitment you’ve brought to this community over the years. Thank you for continuing to show up, embrace the shake, and remind us what consistency looks like.

We are so lucky to have you as part of the OPB family. Here’s to 250 classes—and all the strength, memories, and milestones still ahead! 🩵

Not every kind of progress can be seen in a mirror.
Progress can look like:
✨ Recovering your balance more quickly
✨ Understanding an exercise without overthinking it
✨ Moving with more control
✨ Knowing when to take a modification
✨ Feeling less intimidated by something new
✨ Breathing instead of tensing through the hard part
✨ Trusting your body a little more than you used to
These moments may not create a dramatic before-and-after photo.
But they matter.
Your movement practice is building more than what you can see from the outside.

Do you feel core exercises more in your neck and shoulders than in your abdominal muscles?
A few things may be happening:
✨ Your shoulders are lifting toward your ears
✨ You are pulling your head forward
✨ You are holding your breath
✨ You may need more support under your head
✨ The position or variation may not be right for your body yet
Try softening your shoulders, keeping space between your chin and chest, and using your exhale to connect more deeply through your center.
You can also lower your head, decrease the range of motion, or choose another variation.
Core work should be challenging, but your neck does not need to do all the work.

Things you have definitely heard during an OPB class:
“Relax your shoulders.”
“Down an inch, up an inch”
“Only eight more.”
“This is your last set…on this side.”
“Almost there!”
And the classic:
“This is gonna be fun!”

Which one did you hear in your instructor’s voice while reading this? 😂

Kinda chic… OPB edition. ✨
Embracing the shake.
Moving with intention.
Showing up for yourself.
Finding your people.
Getting stronger along the way.
Yeah… we’d say that’s pretty chic. ❤️

“Didn’t we just do this exercise last week?”
Probably. And there is a reason for that.
Repeating an exercise gives your body the opportunity to move beyond simply figuring out what to do.
Over time, you may begin to notice:
✨ Better coordination
✨ More control
✨ Improved alignment
✨ A stronger mind-body connection
✨ More confidence using different options
✨ Progress you might miss if every class were completely unfamiliar
Variety can keep movement interesting, but repetition is often where you recognize how much you have grown.
The exercise may be the same. You are not.

Unpopular fitness opinions — OPB edition:
✨ Heavier is not always better.
✨ A more complicated variation is not automatically more effective.
✨ Taking a break does not ruin your workout.
✨ Slow and controlled can be harder than fast.
✨ You do not need to leave class completely exhausted for it to count.
✨ The option that looks the least impressive may be the one your body needs most.

Which one do you agree with most?
