James T. Johnson, a co-founder of the Homewood-based Afro American Music Institute with his wife, Pamela, died March 16 at age 76. He leaves behind a legacy of music through the students he mentored in Pittsburgh and the audience that watched him perform.

He is survived by five children, including James T. Johnson III, who performs as a drummer in Pittsburgh. Memorial and funeral services were held at the St. James AME Church in Larimer at the end of March.

The AAMI, founded in 1982, has trained thousands of students in jazz musicianship via a curriculum created by Johnson that embraces music throughout the African Diaspora.
