Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved Black Americans in Texas were finally set free under the terms of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two years earlier.
The first Juneteenth celebration was held one year later, on June 19, 1866, and the holiday spread throughout the Southern U.S. A bill designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law on June 17, 2021 by former President Biden. Opal Lee, an activist and retired teacher, is sometimes called the "grandmother" of the Juneteenth national holiday for her tireless efforts to gain federal recognition for the day.
All University of Pittsburgh offices will be closed June 19 in recognition of the holiday.
The Juneteenth flag, shown here, was created in 1997 by activist Ben Haith. The colors and symbols on the flag are representative of freedom and the end of slavery.

Today marks the beginning of Passover. Itβs also Holy Week for Western Christian traditions.
Spiritual life is an important part of wellbeing for students, faculty and staff, and the University encourages members of the community to celebrate their faith traditions, if they choose.
A variety of on- and off-campus organizations offer fellowship, celebrations and worship. Chabad and Hillel JUC, for instance, hold seders during Passover; while many Christian denominations are holding services throughout the week.
A list of religious resources near campus is available at https://pitt.ly/faith
The University encourages students to request religious accommodations, if necessary, including alternative testing arrangements. Departments are encouraged not to schedule meetings during religious observances, and to offer flexible working arrangements.
Details on requesting accommodations may be found at https://wellbeing.pitt.edu
