As the world begins to re-opens and we transition to the new normals of daily life, it is important to reflect as to how our past experiences guide the decisions we make in the present. If many decisions today are heavily influenced by experiences from the past, then be deliberate and intentional on which past experiences have the most influence.

Worrying is not helpful or healthy at all. It is negative goal-setting because you are giving way to anxiety and rather than looking forward to what is possible, you are dwelling upon the difficulties around you. The opposite of worry or anxiety is certainty, peacefulness, calmness, or happiness. If you are mired in anxiety and look forward to certainty or peacefulness, you ask yourself, “Is the goal of certainty or peacefulness bigger than me or am I bigger than it?”

Our attitude toward a goal drives our motivation to achieve the goal or to stay the same. If the goal is strong enough, important enough, or of enough value to us, we are motivated to act, but if it is not, we won't.

In order to release your potential and make changes, new behaviors need to be identified to match your new expectation and then repeated to the point where they become new habits. If not, you will continue to act in a manner that supports your existing picture, the way you have always behaved, regardless of whether it is close to your actual potential or not.

Patience is the quality to be able to tolerate something that takes a long time. Permanent, lasting change cannot be imposed from the outside. Change must happen from the inside, but seeing the impact of your personal growth on those that are most important to you can provide a tremendous drive to make it happen. It's not easy to make a change, but it is possible, and it's more likely when the change, the outcome you intend becomes more important to you than staying the same.

Creating a new normal or goal accomplishment is a process, not a one-time activity.
If you found yourself initially energized in the pursuit of a new normal only to have your energy and inspiration wane, don’t give up, just start again, but this time commit to the process. By pursuing a new normal, you are deliberately causing disorder within your life, intentionally creating a problem, not an unhealthy problem, but rather a wanted future state, an aspiration, something different than your present reality. In order to change your mind, you need to continually update your imagination to meet your future expectation, the new normal. In fact, we want to be out of order if we are going to seek and be our best.

Creating a New Normal // Dr. Scott Fitzgibbon
As we navigate these challenging times, it is important to focus on what we can control.
We control what we think. You have influence over your immediate household and how those that look up to you think and act. In a few minutes, I am hoping to share some thoughts as to how we can move from a comfort zone of what used to be normal toward creating a “new normal” as that is what we are all facing in our lives right now. The new normal for each of us first begins with our imaginations, then we use the positive emotions associated with the “new normal” to direct our corrective energy forward.
