SRU is helping build a new model for construction management education.

In partnership with the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, SRU is launching a Bachelor of Applied Science in construction management set on the foundation of apprenticeship learning.

The Carpenters helped shape the curriculum, creating a unique degree pathway that expands on the skills and experience workers gain in the trade while adding a college degree from SRU.

“Our industry faces a significant workforce shortage and an increasing need for skilled craftspeople, project managers, project engineers, estimators, and other construction professionals,” said John Mascaro Jr., president and CEO of Mascaro Construction Company, LP. “This partnership between Slippery Rock University and The EAS Carpenters Union brings trade expertise and higher education together to help meet the needs of our industry. This is the kind of practical innovation that earns our support by creating and growing skilled union workers while helping to develop the next generation of construction leaders.”

“This program creates a continuum of learning and a clear pathway for career and professional development—from hands-on skills and technical expertise to the leadership and management capabilities needed to lead the next generation of the construction industry,” said SRU President Karen Riley. “By connecting these educational pathways, we are not asking individuals to choose between trades and higher education; we are creating opportunities for them to build on both.”

Celebrating a Milestone: Congratulations, Casandra! 🎉
We’re proud to celebrate an incredible achievement by Casandra Rowan, who recently became the first woman in her union to earn her Pile Driver Certification!

Casandra has built her experience across a range of challenging projects and jobsites, including the Beaver River Bridge Project, Susquehanna, Havre de Grace, and now the Long Bridge Project in Virginia. Throughout her career, she has continued to embrace new opportunities, strengthen her skills, take on the demanding work to expand her experience in the field, leading to this latest milestone in her career.

Earning this certification is a significant accomplishment, and we couldn’t be more excited to recognize this milestone with her. Casandra shared the exciting news with our Women in Construction group, where her accomplishment was met with pride and celebration. It’s moments like these that remind us of the strength of a community that supports, encourages, and celebrates women as they build their careers in construction.

Congratulations, Casandra! Your hard work, determination, and commitment to your craft are worth celebrating. Your achievement is helping pave the way for the women coming up behind you. 👏🦺

🎉 Congratulations to the our Heavy Highway and Piledrivers Local 274 apprentice Anthony Antonini on receiving the 17th Annual Brandon Chaney CAWP CLC Scholarship!

Developed in 2008 by the Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania Constructors Leadership Council, this scholarship was named in memory of Brandon Chaney, an aspiring third-generation heavy/highway construction professional who died at the age of 16 in an automobile accident before he could realize this goal.

To honor his memory, this scholarship was created to support others who aspire to work in the heavy/highway industry and is awarded to the top-ranking first-year apprentice in each of the four heavy and highway apprenticeship programs in western Pennsylvania. Year after year, the recipients of this scholarship have set the standard for the future workforce of the heavy and highway construction industry in our region!
