✉️ For the last decade, Falk Spanish teacher Lisa Giardina has assigned her students pen pals to help them practice language skills, learn about traditions and culture in Spain, and connect with students their age from a different part of the world.

This summer, for the first time ever, one of her former students met his pen pal in person! 🌎

Liam and his family traveled to Spain for a summer vacation and had the amazing experience of spending an entire day with Diego, Liam's sixth-grade pen pal. The two families met up in a beach town called El Rompido, had lunch together, and spent the afternoon on Diego's family boat. Despite the language barrier (and with a little help from Google Translate 😉), they had a great time!

Giardina says this just goes to show how exciting and impactful the pen pal exchange can be, and she hopes future students will have the opportunity to build equally meaningful connections. 🫶

Some things never change—and that's the way we like it! 🙌

During their trip to the Heinz History Center, Falk's leadership team came across a lot of familiar photos. From kindergarten building blocks to interdisciplinary student projects, the activities documented in the 1938 and 1946 school brochures are still alive and well in our building today.

Coming up on almost 100 years of operation, seeing our foundational values persist across decades is truly something special. 💙

Last week, Falk's leadership team took a field trip to the Heinz History Center! 📑 With help from a professional archivist, they settled into the Detre Library & Archives to study Falk family correspondence, promotional school materials from 1938 and 1946, and letters, progress reports, and class photos from former Falk students. Stay tuned for more on what they found next week!

We are so excited to congratulate Laura Hunt, Falk's K–5 physical education teacher and athletic coordinator, on becoming the Guinness World Records holder for most push ups in one hour (female)!

Ms. Hunt broke the record on November 8, 2025 when she completed an incredible 1,826 push ups in Falk's very own gym. 💪

As the new record holder, she will be throwing the ceremonial first pull at a Pittsburgh Thunderbirds ultimate frisbee game on Friday night. The game starts at 7:00 pm at FNB Stadium, with the pull time at 6:50 pm.

Congratulations, Ms. Hunt, on this incredible accomplishment! Your strength is an inspiration to us all. 🎉

Ever wonder what our teachers are up to over the summer? This month, first- and second-grade teacher Kevin Goodwin has been busy leading art and animation workshops for educators across the country. 🖼️

On July 1, he visited the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland, where he guided local teachers through a creative exercise imagining creatures and cryptids in the landscape paintings. Goodwin says the activity is similar to the CMOA field trip he takes with his students each year and is a great way to spark wonder.

Last week, he continued his summer teaching at the Play Make Learn Conference in Madison, WI. Working with fellow teachers, museum staff members, and librarians, Goodwin walked attendees through the process of stop-motion animation, showed examples of Falk student projects, and helped his colleagues create flipbooks. "We had so much fun enjoying the magic of animation," he says. 🎥

Later this summer, Goodwin and kindergarten teacher Kevin Felter will teach another stop-motion and storytelling workshop, and Goodwin will continue visiting and partnering with the CMOA.
