Meet Maya! ✨

Maya Harrington is a student at Georgia Tech studying history and public policy. As part of her fellowship, she’s working with the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) on their racial equity team, helping develop reports and advocate for more equitable practices across organizations serving people experiencing homelessness.

Through her work with NCH, Maya is passionate about centering the voices and experiences of people who have experienced homelessness and using those perspectives to help shape meaningful change.

We’re excited to have Maya as part of this incredible cohort of fellows and can’t wait to see the impact she continues to make throughout her fellowship! 💙

We had the pleasure of hosting students from Puerto Rico for our Roberto Clemente Program in partnership with Caras Con Causa.

From volunteering with local organizations to experiencing Pittsburgh and connecting with our community, this year's students showed the same spirit of generosity, curiosity, and bridge-building that made Clemente such an extraordinary example of what it means to serve others.

Carrying Roberto Clemente’s Legacy Forward 💙

From learning about Clemente’s life and impact in Pittsburgh to giving back through community service, this year’s Clemente Week of Service brought together young people from Puerto Rico to Pittsburgh for a shared commitment to service, cultural exchange, and building bridges.

In partnership with Caras Con Causa, students explored Clemente’s legacy of humanitarianism, volunteered with local organizations like Tree Pittsburgh and Global Links, and experienced the connections that unite our communities across borders.

As Caras Con Causa’s Michael Fernandez reminds us, Clemente’s legacy is about more than baseball. It’s about overcoming adversity, remembering where you come from, and using your life to serve others.

We’re grateful to our partners, supporters, and the incredible students who made this week so meaningful. Together, we’re carrying Clemente’s spirit of generosity, understanding, and goodwill from Puerto Rico to Pittsburgh and beyond. 🌎❤️

This past month, we welcomed a new playground and an incredible group of young leaders thanks to our partner AllPeopleBeHappy. 🙌

AllPeopleBeHappy is a global nonprofit that funds community development projects and organizes service travel to help improve lives worldwide. 🌎

They helped make our new playground possible and coordinated a service trip bringing youth from Ecuador alongside the non-profit Nido de Vida. 🇪🇨🇩🇴

Our group of volunteers had opportunity to immerse themselves in Dominican culture and life, in addition to helping us prepare our school for the new academic year by painting murals 🎨🖌️, setting up our classroom spaces 📚, and taking part in our Playground Inauguration. 💐

We are so honored to have been able to facilitate cultural exchange between Nido De Vida and our community in Batey Libertad 💛

Our Impact Grants support community-led initiatives around the globe, empowering local partners as they address essential priorities in inclusion, sustainability, education, and community well-being.

AllPeopleBeHappy is funding 5 volunteer experiences around the world 🌎

Applications for the 2027 AllPeopleBeHappy Volunteer Service Award open September 15th.

Five individuals will receive funding to spend several weeks working alongside one of our community partners around the world, contributing their own skills and interests while learning directly from the people leading change in their communities.

From environmental education and conservation in Ecuador to working alongside young people in Sri Lanka and supporting programs serving the deaf community in Ethiopia, these experiences go far beyond traditional volunteering.

They’re an opportunity to listen, learn, build relationships, experience a place beyond what a tourist sees, and come home with a deeper understanding of community-led change.

This summer, AllPeopleBeHappy Volunteer Service Award recipient Katie Boyes traveled to Ghana, where she worked with Peace Humanity International on education and menstrual equity projects.

From teaching at Divine Kids Academy and helping students begin a composting project, to sharing meals with her host family and experiencing Ghanaian culture firsthand, Katie’s time in Ghana became about so much more than service.

It was about the relationships she built, the things she learned, and the people who made her feel at home thousands of miles away.

At AllPeopleBeHappy, we’re all about creating transformative experiences that, as Katie put it, you’ll hold close to your heart forever. 🌍❤️

What if a classroom project could actually make it out into the world?🌎

In Ecuador, a community looking for better ways to grow food began exploring aquaponics, using fish water to help plants grow when traditional farming conditions make things difficult.

Through AllPeopleBeHappy, they connected with Professor Travis Johnson and his students at the University of Illinois, who worked alongside the community to design and prototype two systems.

We then funded the $3,500 project to help turn those prototypes into something the community could actually use.

The system is still evolving, and that’s what makes this project exciting. It’s not a finished case study sitting in a classroom. It’s being tested, adjusted, and used by the people it was designed for.

And that’s exactly where we want ideas to go!
