History Unraveled

Today in Pennsylvania history commemorates a pivotal moment in early 20th-century America. A 'Hunger March' led by Father James Cox, a Catholic priest from Pittsburgh, drew thousands of unemployed individuals to Washington, D.C., making it one of the largest protests in American history at the time. With a caravan of over 12,000 people, starting with 6,000 from Pittsburgh, the group demanded public works initiatives and poverty relief. Cox's march was a precursor to the sweeping social changes that would later be known as the New Deal.

On January 7, 49 BC, the Roman Senate reached a point of no return in its standoff with Julius Caesar. This date marks the official legal trigger for the Roman Civil War. The Event: The Ultimate Decree. The Senate passed the senatus consultum ultimatum (the Ultimate Decree of the Senate), the Roman equivalent of declaring martial law, instructing the magistrates, specifically the consuls and General Pompey the Great, to "take care that the Republic suffer no harm."

On July 13th, 1862. The first battle of Murfreesboro begins. Union soldiers lead by General Thomas Turpin Crittenden, Confederate soldiers lead by General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The battle resulted with a confederate victory, leaving many killed or wounded and capturing over 700 Union soldiers.

Robert Nelson Cornelius Nix Jr was born July 13th, 1928. He served as chief justice of Pennsylvania's supreme court from 1984 - 1996. Making Nix the first African American chief justice of any states highest court, and the first African American to be elected state wide.
