Today, we honor the sacrifice of those we remember and reflect on the legacy they leave behind.

The strongest afterschool programs aren't the ones with the most creative staff. They're the ones with the most consistent systems. When you operate across multiple buildings, attendance drops when:
- Expectations differ by site
- Recruitment practices are inconsistent
- Data gets reviewed too late to act
The fix isn't more effort. It's standardization. Shared recruitment expectations. Clear follow-up after absences. Consistent programming structure. Common incentive frameworks.
When every site runs the same way, good practices scale and attendance holds even when individual staff change. What's one system you could standardize across your buildings this month?

We work with afterschool programs every day to build exactly these kinds of systems. Let's talk about yours.

Attendance improves when families are aligned with the program.
Clear expectations help families reinforce routines, follow up when attendance dips, and see OST as part of the school experience, not an add‑on.
Clear expectations create consistency.

When families don't understand what your afterschool program actually does attendance becomes optional. When families do understand? Attendance becomes a priority. You don't need elaborate events or constant outreach. You need:
- Short, positive messages about what students are doing
- A quick check-in when attendance drops
- Advance notice of special activities
- A clear point of contact families actually know

The programs with the strongest family engagement aren't doing more. They're doing it consistently and intentionally. Proactive family communication is one of the most underused attendance tools in afterschool.

Attendance stabilizes when students feel ownership, not just participation.
Programs shaped only by adults rely on motivation. Programs shaped 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 students build belonging, peer influence, and consistency.
Student voice doesn’t need to be complicated. It looks like inviting students into decisions, giving them visible roles, and showing that their feedback matters.
When students feel the program belongs to them, they help sustain it.
Who are the student leaders in your program?

Attendance stays strong when students have something to anticipate.
Open‑ended programming relies on motivation. Short‑cycle programming builds commitment with defined timeframes, clear themes, and visible outcomes students can work toward.
Each cycle brings renewed energy and a built‑in opportunity to reconnect and re‑recruit.
If students can describe what they’re working on now and what’s coming next, attendance becomes easier to sustain.
Does your program have a clear “next thing” students are excited about?

Here's an honest truth about older students and afterschool attendance:
If they can't connect what they're doing to their future they stop coming. It doesn't take a formal career program to fix this. It takes intentional programming that weaves in real-world skills:

-Resume basics and communication
-Leadership and teamwork
-College and trade school prep
-Career pathway exploration
-Project-based work with real outcomes
When students understand why showing up matters beyond today, they keep showing up. This is one of the most reliable ways to sustain attendance in middle and high school afterschool programs.

Gaming and esports remain some of the most effective recruitment tools for middle and high school afterschool programs. Students show up because it's fun, social, and familiar. But here's what most programs miss: Gaming isn't just games anymore. Structured esports builds real skills:
-Teamwork and communication
-Digital literacy and technical skills
-Leadership (captains, analysts, content creators)
-Career awareness in design, IT, media, and more
When gaming is intentional, it becomes one of the strongest bridges between afterschool engagement and workforce readiness. Is your program using gaming as a doorway — or just a filler?
