In Honor of Black History Month, we would like to honor Dr. James Taylor! He is the Chief Diversity, Inclusion and Talent Management Officer at UPMC. He is such an example of Black Excellence and works hard to bring UPMC at the forefront of discussions around racial equity, diversity and inclusion. Join us in celebrating Black History Month shown in our Leadership within the workforce and the community!
This , UPMC recognizes the important contributions of Black professionals across our network.
Dr. James E. Taylor is chief officer of Diversity, Inclusion, and Talent Management at UPMC. In his capacity as chief diversity and inclusion officer, Dr. Taylor is responsible for the development and implementation of leading-edge diversity initiatives that differentiate UPMC. To this end, he executes next-generation inclusion strategies that advance the diversity management capability of UPMC and its national presence as a health care provider and insurer.
As chief talent management officer, Dr. Taylor provides oversight to the design and ex*****on of an integrated roadmap that provides UPMC with highly effective and technologically advanced employee learning, organizational development, succession planning, and consultative services aligned to the institution’s long-term priorities.
Dr. Taylor’s interest in culture dates nearly two decades to graduate school research when he interviewed the only three Black CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. As of 2022, the number of Black CEOs at Fortune 500 companies has grown to only four.
Dr. Taylor believes in some industries, there are only vague connections between diversity and the core work of the organization. Not with UPMC.
“Our employees are constantly assessing the direct link between culture, workforce productivity, community engagement, and health care outcomes to inform care delivery practices,” Dr. Taylor says. “We are intentional in our ongoing efforts to increase the capability to deliver culturally competent care to our patients and health plan members, recognizing that care needs may differ for individuals from diverse backgrounds.”
