🎹Faculty Spotlight🎶

Dr. Kevin Lee Sun (CMC Artistic Director & MPSOM Assistant Professor of Piano) presents his program Look to This Day, featuring music for piano, alto flute, and soprano. All the music was written by two living composers—Hyo-shin Na and Daniel De Togni—whose programmed pieces are centered around the difficulty, ephemerality, and cherishment of life. Dr. Sun will perform two solo piano works by Hyo-shin Na, her Rain Study and Autumn Study. He will collaborate with Duquesne student Maddie Kolenc on alto flute for Daniel De Togni’s Death Poems, and with Pittsburgh-based soprano Wallis Lucas for De Togni’s Songs of Becoming, a 30-minute song cycle.
The concert is next Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 pm, PNC Recital Hall. Free admission.

Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Taras Filenko (CMC Organ and Piano Faculty)—distinguished ethnomusicologist, music historian, concert pianist, educator, conductor, author, and global ambassador of Ukrainian cultural heritage—will receive the prestigious Clevenard Honorary Award during the Clevenard Open Project 2026 – 5th Edition. The distinguished honor will be presented on Sunday, 30 August 2026, during the Clevenard Global Awards. In addition to receiving the Clevenard Honorary Award, Dr. Taras Filenko will deliver a keynote address during the Clevenard Open Project 2026, sharing profound insights on the transformative power of music, cultural identity, education, artistic diplomacy, and the role of culture in promoting peace, resilience, and international understanding.

Last week's third consecutive Summer Piano Workshop was a great success! The workshop offered young pianists a vibrant, pressure-free environment to elevate their musical skills. Participants had a chance to meet and work with peers and create lasting friendships. In addition to one-on-one lessons, they dived into specialized areas such as piano ensemble, collaborative piano, and improvisation. Guided by our fantastic instructors, Dr. Kevin Lee Sun (Camp Director), Dean David Allen Wehr, Dr. Mary Lynne Bennett, and Anoush Tchakarian, students explored diverse genres ranging from classical masterpieces to beloved musicals. Our intensive workshop wrapped up on June 26th with an exciting showcase, leaving students and their families inspired and motivated. Congratulations to all! We can't wait to see you again next summer!
