This Black History Month, we celebrate four pioneers whose work and leadership expanded who gets to design, build, and belong in architecture.
Norma Sklarek One of the first licensed Black women architects in the United States and the first Black woman to become a fellow of the AIA she led major projects with clarity and care and set a standard for leadership in architecture.
Louis Bellinger A Pittsburgh based architect who used design as a way to serve Black communities when the profession largely ignored them building spaces rooted in dignity and everyday life.
Beverly Lorraine Greene The first licensed Black woman architect in the United States whose career quietly but powerfully pushed against the boundaries of who was allowed to practice.
Julian Francis Abele One of the first professionally trained Black architects in the United States and the mind behind much of Duke University’s campus even though the work was not credited for much of his life.
The work still shapes the spaces people move through today and the futures imagined in design.
Happy Black History Month. 🖤

Welcome back!!! Hope you have had a restful break.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Below is a brief course description of what the course will entail: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This half-semester studio mini course prepares students for the 2026 Barbara G. Laurie (BGL) NOMA Student Design Competition, focused on reimagining Historic Virginia Key Beach Park in Miami, Florida. Students from diverse disciplines will develop a master plan and Living Museum that honors the park’s legacy as Miami-Dade County’s first Black beach and a key civil rights site, while addressing climate resilience, ecological systems, and fading public memory. The project integrates a permanent museum, outdoor landscape design, preserved historic structures, rehabilitative and high-end housing, and a cultural resilience hub to support long-term community and economic sustainability. Emphasizing stakeholder engagement, environmental stewardship, and cultural sensitivity, the final proposal aligns with NOMA values and the AIA Framework for Design Excellence, envisioning Virginia Key Beach Park as an equitable, inclusive, resilient, and educational civic landmark for future generations.
