Happy Valenwine's Eve! Invite to 2 parties and to the final evening of our winter sale. 02/13/2026

Thank you!

Dear Reader,

Thank you so much for your continued support over this past month.

Quick update: We moved somewhere around 20,000 books, 5,000 records, and over 100 bookshelves and record racks from our former location on Walnut Street in Shadyside to our new location at 320 Smithfield Street at the base of One Oxford Centre at 4th and Smithfield. We did this during the worst snowstorm in years, somehow getting through the snowmare alleys and sidestreets on Shadyside in our 10 foot U-Haul on many runs.

The new store is looking beautiful, and my friend John Friedman, the carpenter who built our shelves for the Shadyside store, has been building additional shelving and a new cash-wrap for us. John is a real artist and a real mensch, and while what he's been doing for us is pretty simple and rugged (using basic unfinished pine), given my budgetary and time constraints, he can also do very detailed and intricate woodwork as well. Reach out to him for carpentry: 412-478-2618

My team was amazing on the move, and I couldn't have done this without their dedication, commitment, and their mental and physical efforts. Thank you, Levi Herman, Eric Pierce, Etienne Melton, Simon Zealot, Luke Weber, Ethan George, Judah Kass, Sean Barill, TiMya Harris,Tim Haggerty, Ryan Willis, and Joe Mruk.

Our first week there has been great, and we're looking forward to being there, please God, for many years to come.

Valenwine's Eve!

Last week, I announced our annual Valenwine's Eve shindig at our Squirrel Hill store for tomorrow night, Saturday from 7-11, where you can enjoy a free glass (cup) of wine (kosher) while you browse amongst other book and music lovers.

I subsequently decided to hold it downtown too! We'll have our parties simultaneously, with the only difference being that in Downtown, we'll do it from 7-10, rather than 7-11.

facebook.com/events/1606832483832949 (https://www.facebook.com/events/1606832483832949)

Final Sale Days: For the past couple of weeks, everything in our stores has been 10% off, and Saturday night will be the final hours of this sale. You can combine this deal with our perpetual deal of getting a free used book or record priced up to $10 with every three items that you buy.

Wishing you a great weekend and a warmer next week,

Eric Ackland

Happy Valenwine's Eve! Invite to 2 parties and to the final evening of our winter sale.

Huge opening party Saturday night Downtown, and 10% off everything until the weather breaks above freezing! 02/06/2026

Dear Reader,

I'm taking a brief breather in the midst of a hectic few weeks moving out of our Walnut Street store during a major snow storm while under the clock (done, as of Sunday, thank God,) and setting it all up in our new store Downtown, to send you some important facts and updates.

The snow really slowed us down, and we're not quite where we want to be, but we will be ready to open this weekend, even if behind the scenes there remains much to be done. I think it has come together nicely and looks pretty good overall. ( A photo is below.)

The basic things you need to know:
Take 10% off everything in our stores, used, rare, collectible, or new, and still get a free used book or record priced up to $10 with every 3 items that you buy, until the weather breaks above freezing.

• We are open until 10 today, for your last-minute holiday shopping with free drinks this evening!

• Winter Warm-up Party tomorrow, December 25th, Christmas Day
• We are open on December 26th!
• New Year’s Eve Parties at all 3 of our locations!
• We are open New Year’s Day

I hope that you and yours have been well, safe, and happy this December.

It’s the morning of December 24th, and before the day, which is usually our busiest of the year, gets away from me, I want to share a few things with you.

Thank you! First thank you so much for your loyal support over this past year. By the grace of God, it has ended up being a great year for us. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

New Books, Nearly New Books, and Used Books: We have a tight selection of great-selling, very desirable new book titles, both classic and contemporary, at all 3 locations, as well as a large selection of very-giftable Nearly News at all 3 stores, with the largest concentration of them at our Downtown location at 320 Smithfield Street. We also, as always, have an outstanding selection of used books at Squirrel Hill and Shadyside. Behind our counters we have a lovely selection of rare, collectible books as well. We'll be glad to show you anything you'd care to examine.

Our Downtown store, at 320 Smithfield Street features 98% Nearly New and New Books, and only around 5% used books, and our records are split around 50/50 new and used. The Nearly News and New books are face up on the tables, and being able to easily see all the covers makes it really a delightful way to shop. At our other shops, the ratio between used and new/Nearly New books is almost precisely reversed.

Understanding our pricing: As you may know, when you shop at any of our locations, prices are generally on the inside front free page in pencil at the top right-hand corner. Nearly News should say “NN” under the price. New books should say “New” there in pencil light enough to erase any trace of its existence.

You always get a free used book or record, priced up to $10 with every 3 items you buy from us, and with every purchase of more than $6, you receive a virtual star in our rewards program, and will receive 30% off after your 10th purchase. If all four items are more than $10 each, we'll just take $10 off of the entire purchase.

New and Used Records: Right now, we have an astoundingly awesome selection of both new, used, and even rare records at our stores.

As far as rare records go, In Squirrel Hill alone, where I’m standing right now, behind the counter we have:
• a promo copy of Yes’s “Fragile,”
• a 1st press of Television’s “Marquee Moon,”
• The Dresden Dolls’ “Virginia Monologues,”
• an original “Green Onions” by Booker T. and the M.G.s
• “Harlem River Drive” featuring the late, great Eddie Palmieri,
• Dennis Wilson’s “Pacific Ocean Blue,”
• a first pressing of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,”
• a copy of the “Gimme Shelter” soundtrack from the movie of the Rolling Stones’ infamous Altamont Concert,
• a NM early pressings of “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd,
• an unopened copy of “CHAZ,” a classic Pittsburgh jazz and R&B band,
• a first issue mono copy of “Another Side of Bob Dylan,”
• a promo copy of Gil Scott Heron’s “Pieces of a Man,”
• a lovely copy of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Old Five and Dimers Like Me,”
• a first press of “Leader of the Pack” by the Shangri-Las,
• a cool quadraphonic press of “Dark Side of the Moon,”
• a very early press of The Velvet Underground & Nico (with a peeled banana, but the vinyl itself is gorgeous,
• a copy of “Thinkin’” by Banchee, a heavy psychedelic band whom I had never heard of before,
• and a nice copy of Que Vacilon con La Preferida de Felix Carabella, a classic and hard-to-find salsa album.

These are all available to be shipped. Please write or call if you're interested.

T-Shirts and Tote Bags: We have t-shirts and tote bags with our famed cartoon logo by poster-king Joe Mruk for sale! We even have t-shirt in kid’s sizes. We can ship these if you write us!

Today, December 24th! We’ll be open from 10 this morning until 10 tonight in Squirrel Hill and Shadyside, and you can enjoy a free cold sparkling water or beer while you browse, and we will be open from 11-6 Downtown today as well, and you can have a free cold drink there too.

Give the gift of browsing an amazing bookstore: We have gift cards available, both physical ones, and digital ones, and they are all 10% off face value! You can order a digital one here.

Tomorrow, December 25th, Christmas Day, we will be open as we have usually been over the past 11 years at our Squirrel Hill store. Our hours will be normal, from 10-10, and we’ll be serving my wife’s scrumptious homemade vegan (dairy free) brownies and blondies, vegan hot cocoa, coffee and tea (both of these bought from Blue Monkey Tea, our neighbors on Forbes Avenue. (We got their Guatemalan coffee yesterday, and it is very smooth and delicious.) There’s no need to buy a thing, but we will be delighted to welcome you. I will have the now-rare privilege and joy of working with my longtime friend and employee Sam, who is visiting from Berkeley California.

Friday December 26: We will be open normal hours Friday at all 3 locations, and our weekend hours will be normal as well.

New Year’s Eve Parties! (3 of ‘em) On December 31, New Year’s Eve, we will be having free parties at all 3 stores until 12:30 a.m. We’ll have free cold drinks and snacks, and it should be a wonderful time.

New Year’s Day: It has been said that nothing changes on New Year’s Day, and for us at least, it’s not entirely true. We will be open normal hours on Thursday January 1st at all of our locations and, yet, for a change, will have free hot cocoa, coffee, and tea at each store in the morning and afternoon, and will have our usual Book ‘n Beer nights in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill.

Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate, and happy New Year to all.

Wishing you all abundant blessings for 2026,

Eric Ackland

$5.00 Off at Amazing Books & Records 11/21/2025

Dear Reader,

It has been an intense few weeks here in Whoville, scrambling to make the holidays bright.

We managed to get our Downtown Holiday Pop-Up store at 320 Smitfhfield Street up and running in record time, and it is in the capable hands of Eric Pierce, who ran most of our farmers and flea markets this past summer. Unlike our two main stores, where our inventory is 98% used books and records, at this one, our book inventory is roughly 98% what we call Nearly New books at discounted prices, and just 2% used books, and around 50% new records and 50% used records. In the next couple of weeks, we’ll be getting some 2026 calendars in too, as well as a select array of current and perennial best-sellers! We’ll also have some of these Nearly New books, new books, and new records at our Forbes Avenue and Walnut Street stores.

Nearly New books have usually been previously sold to a retailer and then returned to the publisher for credit toward other books. They are then resold to a distributor, who then sells them to stores such as ours.

I shop a couple of these distributors in person, spending a couple of days walking through their vast warehouses (many football fields in size), selecting top-notch titles in great condition to sell in the stores at discounted prices. The haul for the new pop-up is enormous and awesome. Just great, great titles. As with everything else in our shops, with every 3 items that you buy from us, you’ll receive a free used book or record, priced up to $10.

We’ll be open at the Downtown store for Light-Up night, serving free drinks this Saturday night, from 6 until 10 p.m, and then, this New Year’s Eve, we’ll have parties at all 3 of our locations until 12:30 a.m. We’ll have free beer and sparkling water at each location.

Our book and beer nights continue every Thursday and Saturday night in Squirrel Hill and Shadyside. Thursdays 6-10 in Squill and 6-9 in Shadyside and Saturdays from 5:45 at each store until 11 on Forbes and until 9 on Walnut Street.

We also have a once-weekly book and beer night Downtown on Thursdays, from 4-6 at 320 Smithfield Street. Aside from this Saturday’s light-up night, we will not be having a regular Saturday book and beer night Downtown.

In other news, next Thursday is Thanksgiving, and we’ll be closed at all 3 locations, however we will have a pre-Thanksgiving party at our Squirrel Hill and Shadyside stores only, from 6-10 at both locations.

On Saturday December 14th, we’re participating in the annual Uncover Squirrel Hill Wine Walk, an always-fun event for which spots are limited, so we encourage registering now. uncoversquirrelhill.com (https://www.uncoversquirrelhill.com/) (When you click through, you may notice which Squirrel Hill shop is the focal point on the landing screen!) The event will guide you through approximately 15 different Squirrel Hill retailers sampling different wines, and will run from 4 until 7 p.m. Our doors will open at 5:45, and we will have four wines from which to choose, bought from Pinsker’s Judaica, our former next-door neighbors over on Murray Avenue. We’ll have a dry and a semi-sweet red, and a dry and a sweet white, all Italian Kosher wines produced by Contessa Annalisa. This will run concurrently with our weekly book and beer night, and we’ll be open until 11 however we’ll only serve one drink per person.

If you want to buy new books for the holidays, and don’t foresee being able to get out to your favorite indie new bookstore, consider shopping here: bookshop.org/shop/amazingbookspgh You can buy virtually any book in print and receive 7% off the cover price, we’ll receive 30% of each sale, and participating independent bookstores get an additional percentage of the annual profits.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season,

Eric Ackland, Boss Bookmonger, AB&R

We're bringing books and records back to Downtown for the holidays! 10/24/2025

We're thrilled to be back, and we'll be there very soon.

Dear Reader,

In my last communique I alluded to forthcoming exciting news for us and for you, and I was hoping to keep it under my hat for another week or so, but an intrepid reporter from the Post-Gazette got wind of the news, called me this afternoon to inquire, and I spilled the beans.

It's true. A year and a half since moving from our original location on Liberty Avenue, which ironically began as a pop-up store prior to my having bought it, we are coming back to Downtown as a pop-up store for the holiday season. It will be so good to be back.

It's a big beautiful space in One Oxford Center, at the corner of 4th and Smithfield Street, and I'm super-grateful to Aaron Stauber, the owner of the building for inviting me to be there, as well as to Jason Cannon, the realtor who showed me the space.

The next couple of weeks are going to be intense, but I'm aiming to get this up and running by the beginning of November, and we'll have a big party there on Wednesday November 5th to celebrate, from 4:30 to & 7:30. Our friends from Lucky Sign Spirits and Hazel Grove Brewing will be there to celebrate with us.

We'll have a large array of great, giftable books there, most of which will be on display on tables rather than shelves, (the article only mentions the shelves) a modest selection of records, greeting cards, and other fun items. Our famous free book or record deal will apply at this shop as well.

In other news:

This Saturday night, our Book and Beer Night will go from 7:15 to 9 on Walnut Street, and from 7:15 to midnight in Squirrel Hill.

This weekend, we'll be at the Northside Farmer's Market On Friday afternoon, and this Sunday, we'll be setting up a tent at the Squirrel Hill Farmer's Market Again

It's late, and I must sleep, but since the news was already out there, I thought I should share it with you.

Wishing you all a great weekend,

Eric Ackland

Dear Reader,

Last week we announced this great sale, and it will end tomorrow, Wednesday October 1, at 6:30 p.m. at both stores. We have so many great books and records right now at both stores! Come on by tomorrow!

You can save 10% on any items in our store, new or used, rare or not-rare, and you can combine this with our perpetual deal where you can always get a free used book or record, priced up to $10 with every 3 items that you buy.

On Friday, we'll be open normal hours, and on Saturday, our Book 'n Beer Night will start at 7:40 at both stores.

This Sunday, we'll be setting up our tent at the Neighborhood Flea in Schenley Plaza in Oakland from 10-3. The Neighborhood Flea is a wonderful event which we've been participating in for around a decade. You'll find used clothing, jewelry and other things made by local artisans, food vendors, and much more. The following Sunday, we'll be with them again, in South Side at South Side Works. Their website is right here: https://www.neighborhoodflea.com/events-1/neighborhood-flea-schenley-plaza (https://www.neighborhoodflea.com/events-1/neighborhood-flea-schenley-plaza-tykg4-j4amb-m7msn-r35xn)

We continue to be on the look-out to buy great records, and we pay really well for them! Bring 'em by, or reach out, and we can possibly come to you.

https://www.amazingbooksandrecords.com/buying-vinyl--books.html

We also always pay well for current year best-selling books, both fiction and non-fiction, and pay well for philosophy books too! We can also give you up to triple the cash-offer amount for books in store-credit.

Free Brews from New Trail Brewery this Thursday, and A Cash Call-out for Fresh Vinyl! 09/03/2025

Early autumn, cool days, cold drinks, and great books and records.

Dear Reader and Listener,

I hope this finds you savoring the cool and wonderful weather.

This brief email includes information about:

Buying Records
Buying Books
Free New Trail Brews this Thursday
Night Market Afterparty this month
Outdoor Markets
Holiday Closing in Late September

We Pay Top Dollar for Great Vinyl! As mentioned in the headline, we are paying cash for great vinyl records right now! While we still have a good many good records, our supply has dipped, and we really want to replenish. We're buying collections big and small, and for big collections we can come to you! I'm booking buys now for the rest of the month.

We're looking primarily for classic and contemporary rock and pop, both mainstream and alternative, R&B, soul, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, international, and blues, as well as contemporary composers. (As a general guideline, we prefer not to buy show-tunes, classical music, big band music, and easy listening music. +There's nothing wrong with this music, but we have a surplus of it, and it doesn't presently sell very well.) Call us at 412-421-7000 or at 412-471-1899 or write to us at [email protected] to schedule an appointment, or bring 'em by either location! Please tell your vinyl-loving friends, and share this email with them.

We are offering significant amounts of store credit for good books right now, and we'll pay good cash, or up to 3 times the cash in store credit for super-salable and harder-to-come-by used books (e.g. 2025 and 2024 best-sellers, cult-classics, and contemporary philosophy, as well as for current college textbooks)

We have a new partnership sponsor for our Book & Beer night this Thursday night from 6-10 at both stores, 5430 Walnut and 5858 Forbes, New Trail Brewing Company, out of Williamsport, PA.

Williamsport is in central Northern Pennsylvania, and when I was a child, we would visit my great Aunt, Uncle, and cousins there from our house in Conshohocken, in suburban Philadelphia, once or twice every year. It's a lovely classic small town. It's of course best known for being the home of the Little League World Series, but also, a little more obscurely, known as the former Lumber Capital of the World in the late 19th century. New Trail Brewery was founded just seven years ago, in 2018, and is now one the fastest growing regional breweries in the U.S., and is presently the 46th largest independent craft brewery in the country. They make some mighty tasty beer

New Trail will be giving us 2 beers to share ice-cold cans of with our customers who are 21 or older: their delicious Broken Heels IPA, and Crisp Amber Lager. https://newtrailbrewing.com/

Come on out to either of our shops, have a cold beer, (or a cold sparkling water), and as always, at our shops, get a FREE used book or record, priced up to $10, with every 3 items that you buy from us. This will run from 6-10 at each of our stores. You can rsvp here:

facebook.com/events/1468683270950665

As always, we'll have our Book and Beer night on Saturday as well at both shops.

Our Squirrel Hill Night Market after-party in August was immense fun and a great success -as it was in June also, and we are eagerly anticipating the next one, Saturday September 27th from 7:50 until midnight, which is the final Night Market of the year. I hope you'll come out for it. The Night Market runs from 6-10, and it's such a fun event.

August this year was the best month of the year thus far in Pittsburgh.

Fair, cool weather, just a little rain, lots of sun and happiness. And business was good for us, thank God.

On Walnut Street, after the new Apple store opened in early August, we rebounded to about where we were last summer, after 11 months of being way down in sales. I'm so relieved about this.

We continued to do well in Squirrel Hill , and also at the various outdoor markets we sell at:

Thursdays Downtown at PPG Plaza (10-2)

Fridays at Allegheny Commons (4-7)

First and second Sundays (10-3) at The Neighborhood Flea in Oakland and South Side respectively

Fourth Sunday at the Squirrel Hill Farmer's Market (9-1)

Fourth Tuesday at Bethel Park Farmer's Market (3-7)

and also we did the Oakland Block Party on Schenley Drive a few weeks back, which was a blast, and which was a benefit for a new live music venue in Oakland, called Haven, which is the first full-time music venue in Oakland in around 20 years. https://www.havenvenue.com/

A head's up about days we'll be closed in Squirrel Hill this month:

We'll be closed for Rosh Hashana from 6:45 on Monday September 22nd until 8 p.m. on Wednesday the 24th. We're very grateful for customers who shop a little more prior to and after the seasonal holidays, which helps us tremendously.

If you'd like to buy new in-print books and support us and independent bookshops in general, please consider using this link: https://bookshop.org/shop/amazingbookspgh

Thank you for your continued support!

(and to the Night Market as well, of course)

Dear Reader,

In June, on Night Market night, we were jammed up with a lovely bunch of book and music lovers in our Squirrel Hill shop. We went through several cases of beer and sparkling water, and we jammed to some good tunes, mostly Motown, played at a modest volume.

This Saturday night is the second Night Market of the year, and we're doing it again. You can savor a free ice-cold drink, and browse the biggest independent selection of new books in town. Our perpetual deal applies: You always get a free used book or record with every 3 items that you buy. Our doors open at 8:50 p.m.

The Night Market runs from 6-10 on Murray Avenue between Forbes and Beacon, and there will be live music, food vendors, artists and artisans, and activities for children. It is always a lot of fun. Learn more here: https://www.uncoversquirrelhill.com/nightmarkets.html

At the moment I am composing this, the forecast tomorrow looks promising: high seventies with a low chance of rain. Rain or shine though, we'll be open, and it will be fun.
