Stop scrolling! It's time for a !
I was asked to run a wildlife station at a field trip for 4th graders this spring and decided to do my Wildlife Signatures program. The program consists of staged stops along a hiking trail where students have to find clues and signs such as tracks, s**t, rubbings, fur, feathers, etc. left behind by different species (deer, bear, porcupine, beaver, and turkey). After identifying all the clues and signs, students piece those clues together to identify which animal was there. Before I began setting up, I was informed by the refuge's staff that there was a nesting wild turkey along the trail. This made for the perfect addition to my program. I was able to teach the students about the nesting behaviors of turkeys and give them the opportunity to observe a wild animal in its natural setting. It was definitely a magical moment watching the kids' eyes light up as we passed the hen incubating her eggs. To my surprise, they were also all exceptionally well-behaved and listened to my instructions of staying quiet and still as we walked past, which we all know being completely silent is a hard task for 4th graders on a field trip. It's definitely one program I'll always remember, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this with the students.

How in the world are we managing this? 😕
