Brilliant book co-authored by a local Pittsburgh researcher! Diversity trainers often say that so much of the work is about better communications.

You must explicitly state your assumptions in order to ensure that expectations match.

A challenge: people with different racialized identities do not have shared expectations, because they experience events differently, leading to "fractured reflections in a "process of nonrecognition." When interacting, we make "different sense" of what is happening, according to "different framings of the situation."

Operating without benefit of trust conditions and shared background expectations, the problems at these points cannot be resolved by participants.

Breached expectations [are] where things do not make sense, [and] are essential for understanding how processes of racialization work in interactions and how they can do so without conscious intent."
