On July 4th, 1776, the U.S. declared independence stating “all men are created equal” while leaving hundreds of thousands African Americans enslaved. On June 19th, 1865 the enslaved African Americans of Galveston, Texas were notified of their freedom. Later coming the creation of the 13th Amendment officially abolishing slavery across the United States.
We celebrate this day, June 19th, as a reminder of our freedom, a reminder of how hard our ancestors fought, and a reminder of how resilient we are as a community, as we remain committed to continuing the fight.
