Carlow University President Kathy Humphrey considers Pope Leo XIV to be one of her personal heroes.
So when the opportunity arose to meet the pope and glean his insight into Catholic higher education, Humphrey jumped on it.
She will be one of 22 U.S. Catholic higher education leaders to travel to the Vatican in June for a collegiate seminar, the pinnacle of which will be a private audience with Pope Leo. Incoming Duquesne President David Dausey also will attend the five-day seminar, which begins June 1.
“It’s an opportunity for those of us who are committed to Catholic higher education to come together and really talk about the impact of our work from the Catholic perspective,” Humphrey told the Post-Gazette. “What does it mean to be an institution sponsored by the Catholic faith? We work on that all the time, but this is an opportunity to … talk about this with the first American pope.”
