Alana: I choose Civil Engineering because I’ve always had a knack for solving problems in the moment and using the resources that I had to build anything and everything. Civil Engineering combines my love for the environment, ingenuity, and infrastructure.

One of my favorite projects I’ve done so far was getting to work with local professional engineers to survey traffic, night life and safety on Craig street(a popular street near campus) and propose a redesign to better fit the needs of the community.

Sav: I chose civil engineering because I have always been interested in different types of infrastructure and the process behind the designs.  I also enjoyed math and science classes in high school.

In my Intro to Civil Engineering course, my favorite project was getting to design my own bridge and testing its strength.

Why ChemE?

Sarah: I chose ChemE because of its wide application to creating the materials and products that we use every day. I also really enjoyed chemistry in high school

Kate: I chose ChemE because I am very interested in chemistry and math. ChemE gives me the opportunity to work in a wide variety of fields someday and help as many people as I can!

Thea: I choose chemical engineering because I love problem solving and am fascinated by all the applications of chemically engineered products in everyday life. I enjoy learning about the interactions of different components and how they work together to create an efficient system.

Favorite Projects:

Sarah: In Transport Process Lab (06-363) my group made hydrogel beads and calculated the rate of diffusion of artificial and natural dyes through them. Another one of my favorite projects was in Unit Operations Lab (06-423), my group designed equipment to run a pressure swing adsorber in a Skarstrom cycle to produce continuous oxygen flow.

Thea: My favorite design project so far was designing a water purification process to remove dye, sediment, and other impurities from water within a given time and budget limit.

HUGE CONGRATS TO .owens !! She has been recognized as an All-American 😤.

Owens anchored the defense for the Tartans as a center back who also scored two goals for the season with two assists. The Tartans tied the school record for shutouts in a season with 13 and also tied the school record for most consecutive shutouts with seven. Owens played every minute of University Athletic Association (UAA) play, as the Tartans faced five ranked opponents in a five-week stretch.

The All-American honor for Owens is the fourth straight for a Tartan women’s soccer player as she becomes the eighth Tartan to garner the accolade.

This is also the second year in a row a center back from our program has been recognized as an All-American.

This past weekend our season came to an end. Even until the final whistle this group fought. We finished with an undefeated regular season, became the first Pittsburgh based NCAA women’s soccer program to achieve #1 in the nation, tied the program record for most shutouts in a season, outshot every opponent, and had the longest run as a top 3 ranked team in our program’s history. We will continue to grow and dream big dreams as a program. Thank you to all that have supported this awesome group, we know the best is yet to come. Roll Tarts
