What would a frog hopping sound like on a glockenspiel? What about a snake slithering...or sliding down a slide?

There isn't one correct musical answer.

That's exactly the point.

When our Level 5 students improvise, they're taking musical ideas they're beginning to understand and making choices of their own.

Should the notes move higher or lower? Quickly or slowly? Should they jump around or move smoothly from one to the next?

The teacher provides the framework. The children decide what happens inside it.
They're listening. Imagining. Experimenting. And discovering that they can use music to express an idea of their own.

That's what learning to make musical choices can sound like. 🎶

Why does every Kindermusik child have their own instruments?

Because the music we make together once a week is meant to come home.

Children first experience these instruments in class through listening, movement, exploration and play. Then those same instruments are waiting at home, where there’s time to shake them again, tap out a rhythm, make up something new, or invite you to join in.

And the collection grows as children move through Kindermusik, giving families more ways to make music together.

Those instruments aren't extras. They're one more way we help music become part of everyday family life. 🎶

There's a new instrument in Level 5! 🎶

This week, our Level 5 Year 2 students are beginning their dulcimer unit.

Over the coming weeks, they'll learn to play the instrument while exploring Appalachian music and the musical traditions surrounding it.

For now, though, it begins here.

A dulcimer in front of every child. New sounds to discover. New skills to develop. And plenty of music ahead.

Fall Recital registration is OPEN! 🎶

Our Fall Recital gives students the opportunity to choose a piece they enjoy, prepare it with their teacher, and share their music with an encouraging audience.

This year's theme is Where Music Takes Us, because every piece of music takes us somewhere new.

Something new is coming to Kindermusik this week. 🎶

Over the past several weeks, children have learned the rhythms of their classes. The Hello Song is familiar. They recognize favorite activities and know more about what happens next. Teachers know their students better, too.

And now we're ready to add something new.

Beginning this week, our Kindermusik classes will introduce new music, new experiences, and new opportunities to explore, while carrying those familiar class rhythms right along with us.

From babies experiencing music through everyday routines to our oldest Kindermusik students beginning new instruments, there's so much ahead.

Something exciting is on the horizon for our friend and Artist in Residence, Hannah Ditmire! 🎨

Over the past several summers, Hannah has helped our students create the collaborative art pieces you see throughout Kathy’s Music. Now she's creating something pretty wonderful of her own.

Hannah is opening Ditmire Unlimited art studio, and she's celebrating with an Open House on Broadway on October 24!

We love seeing artists in our community create, grow, and take brave new steps, and we're so excited to cheer Hannah on as she opens the doors to her very own studio.

Introducing our 2026 Fall Recital Theme: Where Music Takes Us 🎶

Every piece of music takes us somewhere new.

A song can take us to another place or time. It can remind us of someone we love, introduce us to a culture we've never experienced, or help us discover something new about ourselves as musicians.

This fall, our students will share music that has taken them somewhere along their own musical journey.

Happy Birthday to Miss Lesley! 🎉

With 20 years of teaching experience, Miss Lesley brings incredible energy to her Kindermusik classes, along with the ability to adapt in the moment to the children and families in front of her.

And that performance energy has deep roots. While studying at Grove City College, she performed leading roles in productions of Guys and Dolls and Alice in Wonderland!

We’re so glad she brings all of that experience, energy, and joy to Kathy’s Music.

What happens when a student is ready for the next part of their musical journey?

For Ansley, it didn't mean moving automatically into the next lesson book.

After working through Faber Level 3B, she had become a confident note reader with strong musical fundamentals. Her teacher began to notice that Ansley was ready for something different.

And Ansley already had some clues about where she wanted to go.

After participating in middle school musicals and several summers of Musical Theatre Camp, she decided she'd like to learn all the ABBA music from Mamma Mia! She's also discovered that she's drawn to lyrical music and waltzes, so she's exploring pieces from Chrissy Ricker's Rhapsodies and Reveries.

Her lessons are changing because she's changing as a musician.

The fundamentals she's spent years developing haven't disappeared. They're what give her the ability to explore more of the music she loves.

And her teacher is there to notice, listen, and help her figure out where she'd like to go next.

That's what it can look like to begin charting your own course with music.
