“I’m from a town just outside of Philly, a diverse community with people of different ethnicities and nationalities and cultures. Coming to Pitt was definitely a shock because of how small the Latino student population is. There’s only a few of us here, especially in the Chemistry department. I feel like the higher level Chemistry and science classes that I’m in have less and less diversity in them.
Recently I’ve been reading a book by The Latina Feminist Group called “Telling to live: Latina Feminist Testimonios,” and throughout the book they’re basically saying to keep telling our stories to bring attention and awareness to what’s actually going on in our communities. Social media makes it really easy to form these groups, these small bubbles of like minded people who have similar views on things. I mean, it can go two ways. It’s definitely important to acknowledge that people’s identities can be based off so many different factors but people should also try to come together and understand each other. Social media can be a problem at times, making people divisive but I think it can be turned around through interconnection and forming larger networks with people. Kind of like what this campaign stands for, showing support and solidarity.”
