On Archons
How we approach this concept within Ecclesia Nocturna is that we don't think we necessarily have to choose between the Archons being literal beings or psychological/archetypal forces. They could potentially be both, (as we believe is the case) or something considerably more complicated than either explanation. Something yet to be discovered, perhaps only discovered after leaving this incarnation.
When you start looking across the different Gnostic traditions, there isn't one single unified teaching about the Archons. Different schools understood them differently. Sometimes vastly different. But there does seem to be a common thread: of consciousness becoming trapped or entangled within the lower material/ cosmic order, with rulers, powers, planetary forces, fate, passions, ignorance etc. Standing between us and the higher divine reality.
Iterestingly enough, some of those texts get pretty damn literal about it. The First Apocalypse of James actually has Jesus preparing James for what happens when these powers seize and question the soul after death. Other texts describe the soul ascending through different Powers or cosmic spheres that attempt to stop or challenge it. Roadblocks to slow the journey. So the basic concept of consciousness encountering forces after death that it has to somehow overcome isn't something invented by modern "prison planet" people. It has been around for a very long time. Though it has taken interesting forms in Anti Cosmic Nihilistic cults in the last three decades.
There really are ancient precedents for it though. Where people make the mistake is taking that and immediately jumping to "the white light is a trap, Earth is an alien soul farm and they're forcing everyone to reincarnate." This description is too vague and simplified. The ancient material does not give us enough to confidently make those claims. But we shouldn't throw those ideas to the wayside, as they have relevance.
What it does tell us is something the church finds considerably more interesting, and sits at the core of its teachings:
Death alone doesn't necessarily equal your liberation, as so many miserable people hope it does. You can die and apparently still be ignorant of what you actually are. And that seems to be the real problem. You must earn your remembrance and freedom. And the earning requires immense dedication, grace and equilibrium.
This is where Gnosis becomes so important. Gnosis isn't just knowing secret information or having the correct passwords. It's knowing what you are, where you came from, and recognizing what actually has authority over you and what doesn't. That's also why the psychological interpretation of the Archons is extremely important. Because maybe we don't have to wait until we're dead to encounter them. Fear and Addiction can rule you. Hell, religion can rule you and often does.
Trauma, lust, anger, greed, ego, shame, social conditioning & family programming (big ones) can all become forces that basically tell consciousness, "THIS is what you are." And we believe it. And if we believe them, they have authority over us.
We don't dismiss the possibility of literal Archonic beings or intelligences whatsoever. We actually believe the ancient material gives us reason to take that possibility seriously. But we also don't think we should become so obsessed with literal Archons waiting for us after death that we completely miss the Archons already operating within us right now.
This is where so many people miss the mark. Similarly to the understanding of Demons. Because ultimately the prison described by Gnosticism isn't just walls around consciousness. It's ignorance in its various forms. And the purpose of Gnosis is becoming conscious enough that whether the thing standing in front of you is an entity, an archetype, a planetary intelligence, your own conditioning, or something we don't even have language for yet, we can recognize it for what it is without mistaking it for ourselves.
