Association for the Rhetoric of Science, Technology, and Medicine ARSTM promotes the study of the rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine.

ARST also hosts day-long conferences in conjunction with the annual meetings of the National Communication Association (NCA) and the Rhetoric of America Society (RSA). In addition, ARST acts as an interest group of NCA to host panels and papers within the conference itself. Originally called the American Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology, in November 2006 members voted unanimo

usly to rename the organization to the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology in order to better reflect the international nature of its membership and intellectual concerns.

It’s that time of year, Everyone!

Time to submit your nominations for the ARSTM Book Award AND Article of the Year Award! 🎉

First up, the Book Award 📚

Books are evaluated based upon their contributions to the rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine, potential to foster connections and engagement with the public, usefulness in teaching, presentation, and overall quality.

Books published during the past two calendar years (2024 - 2025) are eligible, and self-nominations are welcome!

Next up, Article of the Year information 📜

ARSTM also seeks nominations for the most outstanding ARSTM-related article or book chapter published in 2025. Authors are encouraged to self-nominate.

Criteria include the article/chapter’s ability to:

1. Enact practical and/or theoretical knowledge related to the field,
2. Generate cross-disciplinary and/or public engagement,
3. Be used in teaching,
4. Involve inclusive language, examples, and citational practices, and
5. Include quality writing and thinking.

Contact information for the author(s), including affiliation, position, and email address, is required, as is a copy of the nominated article or chapter.

Email materials to [email protected], and use the subject header "Nomination: ARSTM Article of the Year Award." 📨

Hello, ARSTM-ers and friends! 👋

Have you been working on anything related to the concept of "impact"? 🤔 If so, get ready to submit it to an upcoming special issue of POROI!

The special issue provides a place to extend conversations from ARSTM’s 2026 RSA preconference.

Possible topics might include, but are not limited to, questions and ideas such as:

1. How rhetoricians conceptualize impact despite scientific and medical misinformation,
2. What rhetorical histories contribute to conversations about the impact of the sciences, and
3. How we can conceptualize equitable impacts, in terms of how research is conducted, supported, and who it benefits

Academic essays (2000+ words), multimedia projects, video and/or audio essays, interactive digital works, and other experimental forms are all encouraged!

When to Submit: By August 15th.

How to Submit: Include a note with your submission, stating that it is for the special issue on impact.

The University of Waterloo is hosting a fantastic event that we are psyched for!

Beginning on Thursday, May 28, Rhetoricon Symposium: Figures & Constructions, Constructions & Figures is being held at the University's Davis Center.

This event will bring together leading scholars of rhetorical stylistics, construction grammar, and computational linguistics, working at the intersection of figurative patterns and grammatical constructions in the context of neurocognitive exemplar models and machine learning.

Want your book, or a book you’re a fan of, to be a part of the fourth Annual Book Café at the upcoming NCA convention?

Well, now’s your chance! 😊 If:

1. You published a book related to ARSTM since last year’s NCA, OR

2. You wrote a book that will be published this year that should be included, OR

3. You didn’t even write a book yourself but know of one (or more!) that fits the bill,

then please email a link to the book’s publisher page before March 21 to [email protected] and [email protected] for consideration in the proposal for this year’s Café. 📨

The Café celebrates new, scholarly monographs related to science, tech, the environment, engineering, and medicine/health. If that sounds like a book you have in mind, please send it our way!

In collaboration with ARSTM, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is hosting an online symposium titled (Dis)Ruption: Rhetoric of Response and Ability - and we want YOU to submit your materials!

They are seeking works examining rhetoric’s responsiveness to alterity, vulnerability, and difference, and hope you will submit your panels and/or papers for consideration.

This year’s theme is “Circulation and Trust,” and asks how rhetoricians of science, tech, and medicine address questions of trust within and beyond our discipline.
