If you thought the elf on the shelf makes trouble, wait until you hear about the leprechaun at DePaul!

Some of our students were in shock when Ms. Lauren's room was turned upside down! They went on a special scavenger hunt to look for a mischievous leprechaun.

With the help of our SLPs, students had to follow a series of directions and work together to find our green friend. While they did not find the leprechaun, the clues led them to a pot of gold coins! (Chocolate gold coins that is.)

If that wasn't enough, friends in our SAILL preschool classrooms were also greeted by a green mess in their classroom! While our SAILL friends didn't have luck finding the leprechaun, they did find some mysterious footprints on the floor and leading out the window.

What a crazy St. Patrick's themed day we had!

Recently dental students from the University of Pittsburgh visited DePaul School and spoke with us about teeth care and proper dental hygiene.

The dental students prepared engaging, age appropriate content for each grade level showcasing the importance of taking care of teeth and gums. A big thank you to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and everyone who visited!

Our SAILL Preschool students have had quite an exciting few weeks!

Artist Lindsay Woge from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Education Department came to DePaul last month and participated in a weekly series with our SAILL students.

Weekly activities were based on the book "A Perfectly Messed-Up Story" by Patrick McDonnell and each week the students participated in a variety of social and emotional art related activities.

At the end of the weekly visits, Lindsay collected artwork the students had made and weaved the pictures to make a unique story book that she gifted to the DePaul SAILL classrooms.

Thank you Lindsay for sharing your artistic talents and spending some time with our students!

Happy National Reading Month! DePaul School is celebrating the importance of reading...all month long!

Last week students had loads of reading related activities including reading theme days, Drop Everything And Read (READ) moments, and even a special cake celebration at the end of the week where students shared as a group why reading is so important!

One student stated it builds imagination, another said reading takes you places, and another student talked about how reading helps you learn. They were so talkative during our school wide gathering!

We have a whole month to explore fun reading activities so stay tuned throughout March for all of the exciting activities happening at DePaul!

As part of Preschool’s recent Pet Unit, students had a special visit from our Director of Pupil Services, Mr. Dave, and our school's therapy dog, Jack!

They learned about what Jack likes to eat and drink, and how he gets groomed, goes to the vet, and learns important things at dog school.

Later our oldest preschoolers had a visit with our elementary teacher, Ms. Margaret, to learn about how she takes care of her class guinea pigs, Peppa and Taffy. They gave them lettuce, hay, and water, and even got to hold Peppa!

Happy Read Across America Day! 📖📖📖

We are so excited to announce that for the entire month, we will be celebrating reading at DePaul with an assortment of activities!

We can't wait to share with you all of the fun things planned including random Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) moments, special guest readers, reading bingo, and more!

There is so much planned for our students this month so we hope you will check back with us and support our DePaul community as we emphasize the importance or reading and literacy!

Did you know many families move from all over the world for DePaul's unique education program?

DePaul School’s Elementary curriculum is one of the only Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) schools in the country to teach children up to 15 years of age to listen and speak.

While most LSL programs in the country end their services between Kindergarten and 5th grade, DePaul strives to serve as an option for families looking for an extended LSL program and can provide intentional small group intervention for students.

Share in the comments your unique journey to DePaul's doors!

A few of our preschoolers pretended to be bakers sorting cookies by shape.

Adding gross motor elements like the balance beam and fine motor elements like holding a cookie on a spatula not only make the activity more fun, but help to develop the whole child!

Learning about magnets in science class can be so much fun!

Did you get all of your Valentines out in the mail? Earlier this month, some of our preschool classes had a special trip to our mail room to learn how mail works!

After making special Valentines for their families, the students put postage on their envelopes (with Ms. Donna's help) and placed them in the mailbox. Many of the preschoolers couldn't wait to check their mailboxes at home!

Have you heard about our Little Listeners programs? Take a look at some of our various early intervention resources below!

🟠 Toddler Group - DePaul's Toddler Groups focus on developing LSL skills in a classroom setting through circle time, movement, and language experiences. Caregivers and children with hearing loss (18 months to 3 years old) are invited to join us for these 90 minute sessions every Tuesday and Thursday.

🟠 Music Group - DePaul offers multiple music group series throughout the year for caregivers and children with hearing loss (birth to 3 years old). Emphasis is placed on listening skills, singing songs, and guidance in incorporating music into daily activities. Keep an eye out for our next series this Spring!

🟠 Parent Pals - DePaul offers a safe place for parents and caregivers of newly diagnosed children with hearing loss to meet with other families to exchange tips, resources, and ideas. Caregivers can also opt-in for coaching sessions facilitated by a DePaul professional to empower them through their child's developmental process and learn about various LSL techniques and resources.

All of DePaul's Little Listeners programs are co-taught by a Teacher of the Deaf and a Speech-Language Pathologist. Please visit our website or contact us for more information.

Just a friendly reminder that like the Post Office, DePaul School is closed today for Presidents' Day.

Classes will resume tomorrow for another week of listening and speaking. Enjoy your long weekend!
